Welcome to the official page of The Sixth Form at Southmoor Academy There are two reasons why we have chosen to call ourselves The Sixth Form.

Welcome to the Sixth Form at Southmoor Academy and thank you for showing an interest. Firstly, we want to provide a genuine choice for all post-16 students in the area, regardless of the school they currently attend. Although we are proud of Southmoor, we are seeking a bigger identity and we have a much greater ambition than to simply be an add-on to one existing school. To Achieve this, we promis

Recently, the majority of our Year 12 students have been taking part in exciting work experience placements. They have spent these weeks with employers learning about the world of work, future career opportunities and gaining important employability skills. Students have worked in a huge range of different sectors, with the top sectors including education, construction, manufacturing, skills training, healthcare sciences, retail & sales and sports & fitness.

A record number of organisations have hosted our students this week, including some employers taking multiple students such as Accenture, Siblings Nursery, Sunderland City Council, Sunderland Care and Support, and so many more, including many of the local primary schools. We have been delighted to already receive so much positive feedback from the employers – we are extremely proud of every single student! Students have been involved in all different activities both in the local area and beyond.

At Southmoor, we strongly believe that work experience is an essential part of a young person's education and we are delighted to give our students the opportunity to spend a week with an employer.

Last week, our prospective Sixth Form students enjoyed two engaging transition days, designed to give them a taste of Sixth Form life while helping them develop new skills and build confidence ahead of September.

On Thursday, students took part in a range of leadership activities, encouraging them to work collaboratively, communicate effectively, and develop the qualities needed to succeed as leaders within our school community. The activities provided an excellent opportunity for pupils to get to know one another, challenge themselves, and begin forming the strong relationships that will support them throughout their Sixth Form journey.

On Friday, students experienced a selection of Sixth Form taster lessons, giving them valuable insight into the subjects they may study next year. These sessions allowed pupils to meet teachers, explore new ideas, and experience the greater independence and academic challenge that Sixth Form learning offers.

A particular highlight of the day was a CPR training session delivered by Sergio from the Red Sky Foundation. Students learned essential lifesaving skills, including how to recognise someone in cardiac arrest, perform effective CPR, and understand the importance of acting quickly in an emergency. The session was both informative and inspiring, equipping our students with practical knowledge that could one day help save a life.

We would like to thank Sergio and the Red Sky Foundation for delivering such a valuable session, and we are incredibly proud of the enthusiasm, maturity, and commitment shown by all of our students throughout the transition programme.

We look forward to welcoming them back in September as they begin the next exciting stage of their education in Sixth Form.

Last week, we proudly celebrated our incredible Year 13 students as they reached the end of their Sixth Form journey with a fantastic farewell event filled with laughter, memories and celebration.

The day was packed with fun, from unique and hilarious awards to giant inflatables, a leavers assembly, and the much-anticipated signing of Year Books. One of the highlights had everyone cheering as our Year 13 form tutors took to the track for a memorable 100m dress-up dash!

The strong relationships we build with our students don't end when they leave Sixth Form, and we can't wait to catch up with everyone again at this evening's Year 13 Prom. With many students already securing places at leading UK universities, we now look forward to celebrating their results in August as they begin the next exciting chapter of their lives. We wish every one of them every success for the future!

Last week, on Tuesday evening, we welcomed parents and carers into school for our A Level Art Exhibition, celebrating the outstanding work of our A Level Visual Arts students.

The exhibition featured an impressive range of pieces across drawing, painting, photography, mixed media and sculpture, showcasing months of creativity, experimentation and skill development. Each artwork reflected the individuality and talent of our students, making for a highly inspiring evening.

It was a wonderful opportunity for students to share their achievements with family and staff as they reflect on their artistic journeys.

On Wednesday, Year 12 spent the day at the University of Sunderland to build and develop their academic skills and have a taster of learning at University level. We were welcomed into the newly updated Murray Health building where students learned more about the university and student life. Students were then split into two groups to take part in some academic taster sessions in a range of students, led by academic staff from the university. Students interested in nursing/midwifery, physiotherapy/sport, pharmacy and psychology remained at City Campus, whilst those students interested in Film/Media/Journalism, Business and law were transported across to the St Peter's Campus. As part of the academic taster sessions and the campus tour, students were able to see and use some of the fantastic facilities from across the campus, from the immersive Nursing suite, Pharmacy laboratories, Law court room, business suite to the Journalism media hub. Our students thoroughly enjoyed the experience and left with much to think about. We are incredibly grateful to the university for the opportunity to host our students on campus for the day.
