Sixth Form at Southmoor

Our Sixth Form students once again organised a fantastic Macmillan Coffee Morning, helping to raise funds for people living with cancer.

Cakes were available to buy in the main school yard at breaktime, with every penny raised going towards the vital work of Macmillan Cancer Support. This year also marks the 35th anniversary of Macmillan’s annual coffee mornings, making the occasion even more special.

A huge well done to everyone involved for making this year’s event such a success.

Our Year 12 Law students recently visited Newcastle College for an immersive experience in its Crime Village, giving them the opportunity to put their classroom learning into practice.

The Crime Village is a dedicated simulation space designed to recreate real-life policing and criminal justice scenarios. Newcastle College’s facilities include simulated environments, crime-scene investigation resources and spaces where students can practise applying their knowledge to realistic situations.

For our students, the visit provided a valuable insight into how the law works beyond the classroom, allowing them to explore practical aspects of policing, evidence and criminal investigation. It was a great opportunity to develop their understanding while experiencing the type of hands-on learning available in the criminal justice sector.

The visit also gave students a taste of the facilities and opportunities available at Newcastle College as they consider their options for further study and future careers in law and the wider criminal justice system.

There was plenty of passion on show last week as our Year 12 and Year 13 students went head-to-head in what we hope will be the first of many friendly Sixth Form football fixtures.

This was the first time we have been able to establish a football team in the Sixth Form, making the fixture a particularly special occasion. In a closely contested game, Year 12 came away with a 2–1 victory.

Both teams gave their all, with plenty of energy, determination and competitive spirit on display. But just as impressive was the sportsmanship shown throughout the game, with students showing respect for their opponents and celebrating good play on both sides.

It was a fantastic opportunity for our Sixth Form students to compete, have fun and build relationships across the year groups – proving that a little friendly rivalry can go hand in hand with great camaraderie. Congratulations to both year groups for getting the Sixth Form team off to such a positive start!

A new academic year is underway, and we’re delighted to welcome our Sixth Form students back to Southmoor!

A special welcome goes to our new Year 12 students, who are beginning an exciting new chapter as they take their first steps towards higher education, future careers and life beyond school.

This is a time to discover new interests, build confidence, challenge yourself and start thinking about where your ambitions could take you. With so many opportunities ahead, we can’t wait to see what our Year 12 students aspire to achieve during their time at Southmoor Sixth Form.

And to our Year 13 students – welcome back! We’re looking forward to supporting you through an important year as you work towards your next steps.

This Friday (19th September) we will be donning our denim once again in support of the national charitable initiative ‘Jeans for Genes Day’. The organisation helps disorder-specific charities and patient groups to deliver inspiring projects and support services for children affected by a genetic disorder in the UK.

Students may make any monetary contribution they wish in order to wear their jeans and any type of footwear for the day. Students are required to wear the correct full uniform (including a school tie) from the waist upwards. Money will be collected during Aspire AM on Friday, through ParentPay and alternatively money can be donated through our dedicated JustGiving page.

🔹 Year 7 – 8:25am
Please be on the school yard ready for your welcome assembly.

🔹 Years 8 & 9 – 9:45am
Please be on the school yard. Year 8 will attend their assembly, while Year 9 will go straight to form.

🔹 Years 10 & 11 – 10:45am
Please be on the school yard. Year 10 will attend their assembly, while Year 11 will go straight to form.
