What Is the Social Action, Responsibility and Heroism Act 2015 (SARAH Act)?

Many people are concerned about providing first aid in an emergency because they worry about legal consequences if something goes wrong.

In the UK, the Social Action, Responsibility and Heroism Act 2015 — often referred to as the SARAH Act — was introduced to provide reassurance to those who step forward to help others.

But what does the Act actually mean in practice?

What Is the Social Action, Responsibility and Heroism Act 2015?

The Social Action, Responsibility and Heroism Act 2015 is UK legislation that requires courts to consider the context of a person’s actions when determining negligence or breach of statutory duty.

In simple terms, the Act recognises that individuals acting:

✅For the benefit of society

✅In an emergency

✅To help someone in danger

✅Should not be judged unfairly if something goes wrong while they are trying to assist.

What Does This Mean for First Aiders?
If someone provides first aid in good faith, during an emergency, and within the limits of their training, the courts must consider:

✅Whether they were acting heroically

✅Whether they were trying to assist someone in danger

✅Whether they were acting responsibly

The Act supports those who step forward to help rather than penalising them for attempting to do the right thing.

Does the SARAH Act Protect First Aiders from Being Sued?

The Act does not provide blanket immunity from legal action.

However, it reinforces existing legal principles that already make successful claims against first aiders extremely rare — particularly when:

✅The person acted in good faith

✅They did what they reasonably believed was appropriate

✅They stayed within the scope of their training

In reality, there are very few cases in the UK of first aiders being successfully sued for assisting in an emergency.

Why This Matters for Workplace First Aiders.
Some employees hesitate to volunteer as First Aiders due to fear of legal consequences.

Understanding the SARAH Act can help:

Increase confidence

Encourage volunteers

Strengthen workplace emergency preparedness

Reinforce the importance of training

Proper training ensures individuals understand both their responsibilities and their limits.

The Importance of Accredited Training
While the SARAH Act offers reassurance, the most important protection for a First Aider is:

Proper training

Acting within competence

Following workplace procedures

Accredited First Aid training provides the knowledge and confidence needed to respond appropriately in an emergency situation.

Manual handling tasks are a common part of many workplace activities across a wide range of industries.

From lifting and carrying to pushing or pulling loads, poor manual handling techniques can lead to musculoskeletal injuries and long-term absence from work.

But is Manual Handling training a legal requirement for employers in the UK?

What Is Manual Handling?
Manual handling refers to any activity that involves:

🔸️Lifting
🔸️Lowering
🔸️Carrying
🔸️Pushing
🔸️Pulling
🔸️Moving loads by hand or bodily force

This can include handling equipment, stock, tools or materials in a workplace environment.

The Legal Framework❗
Manual handling is covered under the:

▪️Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 (as amended)

Under these regulations, employers have a legal duty to:

▪️Avoid hazardous manual handling where reasonably practicable
▪️Assess the risk of injury from manual handling tasks
▪️Reduce the risk of injury as far as reasonably practicable

Is Training Required?
While the regulations do not state that Manual Handling training must always be provided, they do require employers to take appropriate steps to reduce the risk of injury.

In many cases, this includes providing employees with:

🔸️Information
🔸️Instruction
🔸️Training

Appropriate training helps ensure that staff understand:

🔹️Safe handling techniques
🔹️Workplace risks
🔹️Control measures
🔹️Their own responsibilities

Why Is Manual Handling Training Important?
Manual handling injuries are one of the most common causes of workplace absence in the UK.

Providing training can help organisations:

🔹️Reduce injury rates
🔹️Improve employee wellbeing
🔹️Demonstrate compliance with legislation
🔹️Promote safe working practices
🔹️Reduce costs associated with absence or claims

Who Should Receive Manual Handling Training?
Training may be required for employees who:

▪️Lift or move stock or equipment
▪️Work in warehouses or logistics
▪️Work in construction or manufacturing
▪️Provide care or support services
▪️Perform repetitive handling tasks

Employers should base training decisions on the outcome of their manual handling risk assessment.

Supporting Workplace Compliance
Providing Manual Handling training supports employers in meeting their legal obligations and maintaining a safe working environment.

Training helps ensure that employees understand how to carry out tasks safely and minimise the risk of injury.

🩺 SAMPLE – Getting the Right Information Fast

In a first aid situation, once immediate dangers have been dealt with, SAMPLE is a great and simple way to gather vital information about a casualty.

It helps first aiders understand what’s going on and make better decisions while waiting for further help.

SAMPLE stands for Signs & Symptoms, Allergies, Medications, Past medical history, Last oral intake, and Events leading up.

Asking these questions gives a clearer picture of the casualty’s condition and helps identify possible causes of illness or injury.

Using SAMPLE also improves communication with emergency services, ensuring accurate and relevant information is passed on if 999 is required.

It’s a core skill taught on our EFAW & FAW courses and is useful in workplaces, public settings, and everyday emergencies.
