This week on the Inner Game Academy, we were privileged to be joined by .youngg1.

At 19 years old, he has already played 60 games in the Football League as a goalkeeper.

And you can see why his mentality, his mindset, his self-awareness, his commitment to learn and always improve is something we rarely see.

And even better than that, he's just a genuinely good guy. Keep an eye out for him; he's definitely one to watch.

A lot of players come to me and say, "I want to learn how to deal with mistakes."

I always say it starts before the mistake happens

See if your foundations are built on sand; then you're really gonna struggle.

Most players want their game to be perfect. They don't want to make mistakes, so they try and avoid them.

And when they make a mistake, they go, "My game's done now."

Every player makes mistakes.

It's your ability to deal with them that counts, and actually moving towards them that makes a difference.

I've done a 17-minute training for pros about this. All you need to do is DM me ‘pro’, and I'll send it to you.

As promised:

One of the biggest reasons players don’t improve their ball striking is because they practise without a real target.

Every strike needs intention.

Not just “somewhere over there.”
Not just “towards goal.”
A target.

A cone.
A post.
The inside of the post.

Aim small, miss small.

Because the moment you give yourself a specific target, you get the feedback you need to improve. You know if you were close, how far you missed by, and which side you missed on.

But the real improvement comes from the feel.

Too many players hit one badly, throw their hands up, get frustrated, and move on.

That’s the moment they should slow down and learn.

Strike.
Feel.
Adjust.
Go again.

Think about when a guitar is out of tune.

You don’t make a massive turn and hope for the best.
You make a tiny micro-adjustment, listen closely, and improve it bit by bit.

Ball striking is the same.

Small adjustments.
Fine tuning.
Learning from the feel of each strike.

What did it feel like?
Could you feel where it was going before you even looked up?
What tiny adjustment do you need next time?

That is how ball striking improves.

Not just through repetition.
Through awareness.

Because if a player can feel it, they can fix it.

WE HAVE LIMITED SPACES IN THE INNER GAME ACADEMY

Joah knows he hasn’t played that well today.

He made a few mistakes.
He already feels bad about it.

He gets in the car.

You give him that look.

You know the one.

The look that says, “You didn’t do very well today.”

Then comes the tone.

“How do you think you did today?”

His heart drops.

Because right now he doesn’t need analysis.

He just wants your love.
He just wants your support.
He just wants to make you proud.

But your body language is tight.
Your tone tells him something else.

So he says quietly,

“I thought I did okay…”

And you reply,

“Well you made this mistake.
You cost them that goal.
You didn’t do as well as you think.”

He sinks into his chair.

He wishes the car would just swallow him up.

The journey is only 20 minutes.

But to him it feels like hours.

When he gets home he goes straight to his bedroom.

And he cries.

Not because of the mistake.

But because he thinks you’re disappointed in him.

He starts to believe something that breaks so many young footballers.

That how he plays…

determines how much you care about him.

And we both know that’s not true.

But the way we speak in those moments can make it feel true to a child.

That’s why me and Luke O’Nien ran a Parents Masterclass on how to handle the car journey home and support your child properly.

Because the right words in that moment can build confidence.

The wrong ones can slowly destroy it.

If you want the replay of the masterclass…

Comment “REPLAY” and we will send it to you. ⚽❤️
