🫂Today we went off to Osterley House and Gardens - National Trust with our friends from LWC Childminding and Faye’s childminding service 🫂

😃We made stick buddies using some air dry clay, sticks and other Autumn nature items we found on our walk. Children first had to roll the clay into balls and then stick it onto their sticks. Once they had found items to make eyes, a nose, mouth and hair they stuck them into the clay too.😀

🍁After we had made our stick buddies we went on a conker hunt, looking in all the fallen leaves and hoping to spot a shiny conker. We managed to find 4 and lose 3 on our adventures! We discussed the differences between the shiny smooth conkers and their rough spiky shells, and also about who may have eaten those that looked a bit chewed!🍁

✏️This activity is great for having conversations and introducing key words around our faces, similarities and differences, autumn, texture, hibernation, wild animals and many more. Its also a great gross and fine motor skills activity, helping children to strengthen those hand muscles to help them be able to do things like mark making and writing in the future. Its also great for our daily exercise and strengthening legs and increasing stamina for walking.✏️

Today we headed to Fairoaks Airport to see the planes and helicopters take off and land. We also saw them being refuelled and the fire trucks. The children absolutely love saying hello to the pilots and getting a special wave from all those working at the airport. Very lucky to have this on our doorstep.

It was great to be joined by our friends from LWC Childminding and Faye’s childminding service

Today we attempted some bubble printing although the printing didn't actually work! So instead we enjoyed some sensory play with bubbly water and straws. The children loved seeing how many bubbles they could make and how big they could get them!

Blowing through straws as sensory play has many positive outcomes such as:

👅 Physical Development & Communication

Oral motor strength: Strengthens the jaw, lips, cheeks, and tongue.

Speech clarity: Helps children practice lip rounding and tongue retraction.

Sound production: Assists in making complex sounds like "P", "B", "M", and "Sh".

Feeding skills: Improves lip sealing and swallowing control for cleaner eating.

Fine motor skills: Develops finger grip and hand coordination when manipulating the straw.

🧘 Personal, Social, and Emotional Development (PSED)

Emotional self-regulation: Deep breathing through a straw acts as a natural mindfulness exercise.

Nervous system soothing: Lengthens exhales to calm the body during big emotions or anxiety.

Focus and attention: Captivates children's concentration during mesmerising tracking tasks.

🎨 Expressive Arts and Design

Process art: Activities like blow painting focus entirely on creative exploration rather than the end product.

Colour mixing: Offers a visual look at how liquid paints combine when blown together.

🔬 Understanding the World

Early science concepts: Teaches children how air pressure can cause physical movement.

Visual tracking: Enhances spatial awareness as children track moving paint or pom-poms.

Happy World Dinosaur day! We celebrated with our friends at Echelford Care Home, with Dinosaurs, playdoh and colouring.

Lots of small world play, sensory play, and lots of active imaginations. Everyone was engrossed for our whole stay at the care home.

We've had the best morning at Kew Gardens walking around the Henry Moore exhibition.

We highly recommend it. The children loved the interactive exhibition, we loved talking about the different shapes, textures, what we thought the sculptures looked like.

Art is crucial in EYFS for fostering creativity, emotional expression, fine motor skills, and critical thinking. It allows children to communicate feelings, explore materials, and build self-confidence. Studying famous artists sparks imagination, introduces different styles, and connects children to art history.

This exhibition is running all the way through to January 2027 so there is plenty of time for you to visit.

There are 30 sculptures to visit as well as a gallery exhibition. The family trail consists of 10 of the sculptures so there's a few more for us to find next time.
