MEET THE OWNER… and the story behind Pomfrett Cottage Nursery.
If you’re new to our page, let me introduce myself…
I’m Sonia, and my journey with Pomfrett Cottage Nursery began long before I became its owner.
Twenty one years ago, this nursery was about to close its doors forever.
Today, it continues to thrive, with generations of families walking through those same doors, and I still pinch myself that I get to be part of its story.
When my children were little, I worked as a childminder, and both of my grown-up children now aged 34 & 26 attended Pomfrett Cottage Nursery. It was a place that held so many happy memories for our family.
In 2004, when my son was in his final year, the previous owner, Sue Abrook, who has known me since I was just five years old, made the difficult decision to retire from nursery life and close.
The thought of our community losing such a special place simply didn’t sit right with me.
So, I asked Sue if she would trust me to continue her legacy.
She said YES 🥳
I then studied for 12mths to gain my Level 3 qualification in Early Years Care and Education. Sadly my beloved grandmother at the age of 99 passed during this time which changed everything, she left me a small gift which enabled me to purchase the nursery and I proudly became its new owner in August 2005.
Just one year later, in 2006, we were invited to move into Chennestone Primary School, giving us a larger classroom and outdoor learning space where your children continued to flourish.
Over the past 21 years, we’ve grown from offering morning sessions to full-day, term-time care. We’ve watched hundreds of children learn, laugh, grow in confidence and head off to school ready for their next adventure.
I’ve also been fortunate to work alongside some incredible staff, many of whom have gone on to achieve wonderful things.
The last 12 months have been one of our biggest chapters to date.
As a team of 3 in September 2025 we challenged ourselves to become even better. We reflected on every part of our practice, revisited our why, strengthened our curriculum and continued to build the calm, nurturing environment that has always been at the heart of everything we do.
Today, as a team of 4 we bring together an exceptional level of Early Years qualifications and SEND qualifications, to include two EY teachers, a Primary teacher and our Level 6 deputy who will begin her EY teaching studies in September. More importantly, we share the same values, the same passion and the same commitment to giving every child the very best start in life. We are whole heartedly committed to making a difference.
Together, we’ve created a nursery where children feel safe, valued, confident and excited to learn every single day.
If you’re a past or present Pomfrett Cottage family, we’d love to hear from you. Share your favourite memory in the comments 💙
