In early years, staff are naturally generous with their time, energy and care. But when saying yes becomes the default to everything - extra tasks, difficult conversations, last-minute changes, emotional demands - it can quietly lead to overwhelm.

Giving your team permission to say no isn’t about lowering standards. It’s about protecting professional boundaries so they can keep showing up consistently for children, families and each other.

Confident teams understand what sits within their role, when to ask for support, and how to respond professionally without carrying guilt. As leaders, modelling this clearly helps create a culture where staff feel safe, respected and able to sustain the important work they do every day.

If this is something your team finds tricky, it’s a powerful area to start strengthening - because healthy boundaries support strong practice across the whole setting 🙌🏼

Honest talk for early years managers who’ve been running on empty (with no sign of a refill in sight)…

You’re the glue that holds your setting together – the go-to, the problem-solver, the last one out and the first one worrying about ratios, rotas, and regulatory changes. You show up for your team, your families, your children… but when was the last time you showed up for you?

Let’s be real: “self-care” can feel like a luxury when you’re facing recruitment gaps, paperwork piles and that ever-present pressure to meet Ofsted standards. But here’s the thing – sustainable, high-quality childcare doesn’t happen at the expense of your wellbeing. It happens because of it.

If your cup’s empty and the kettle’s missing, maybe it’s time we stopped glamorising the burnout and started building in better support.

👉 Need permission to take a breath? You’ve got it.
👉 Want to lead with strength and softness? You can.
👉 Looking for guidance that’s both kind and compliant? We’re here.

You don’t have to carry it all alone – and you definitely don’t need to run on fumes. Check out our consultancy and coaching options for specialised help if, as and when you need it.

Let’s talk: What’s one small way you’re refilling your own cup this week? Or are you still searching for the kettle?💬

What would happen if you stopped pushing through and started pausing instead? You might just find your whole team relaxes with you.

In early years, your energy sets the tone for everything, from the morning welcome to how your team navigates the trickiest days.

Protecting your own peace isn’t selfish, it’s an act of leadership. When you pause, breathe, and model calm under pressure, your team feels it too. And that calm ripples right through to the children in your care.

So, give yourself permission to slow down. Step outside for five minutes. Delegate where you can. Notice what you need.

Because nurturing others starts with nurturing yourself 💛

Theres been a little change for September ..

Ofsted has strengthened the Children’s Welfare and Wellbeing judgement area, giving greater emphasis to children’s emotional wellbeing, sense of belonging, relationships, health and overall day-to-day experience within settings

The updated wording makes it clearer that inspectors will be looking at how well children feel safe, secure, valued and supported, as well as how practitioners respond to their individual care, emotional and wellbeing needs

Leadership in early years can feel lonely at times.

You’re expected to support your team, respond to families, keep up with changing expectations, and make confident decisions every day, often without a space to pause and talk things through with someone who truly understands the role.

That’s why regular leadership conversations matter.
Having time set aside each month to reflect, ask questions, share experiences and hear how other managers are approaching the same challenges can make leadership feel clearer, steadier and far less isolating. It strengthens your confidence, and that confidence filters right through your setting.

If you’d value a supportive space like this, our Monthly Managers Power Hour brings leaders together for practical discussion, sector insight and connection across the year.

Our next Power Hour is on 26th June (10-11) and we have the wonderful Stephanie Hammond joining us to talk all things Pre Phonics in Early Years 🗣️
