Flutes of the Forest

IN MY Music room, I have this little photo up on the wall. It reminds me so much of happy days spent teaching flute (and piano/keyboard) when I lived over the water from Stroud in The Forest of Dean.

I started teaching in Gloucestershire schools way back in 1997 but also set up a from home teaching practice. These were some of my pupils. At the back you can see Kathy who came along in her 40s with no previous experience but a real enthusiasm to play the flute - she quickly rose through the levels and after three years she had gained a distinction in Grade 5. Other adults I taught also proved very able but mostly didn’t want to do exams, preferring to enjoy their lessons and play without any added pressure - after all it can be quite nerve wracking picking up an instrument later in life. The youngsters in the pic were regular members of a flute choir that I ran called Flutes of the Forest. We played quite a few concerts locally and also collected money for The Childrens’ Society every Christmas by playing inside a local supermarket. We had a lot of fun and it was a great way of enjoying our music making together.
