Reveal the power and pleasure of using your voice with conviction and compassion. Who Is Kristin Linklater? Professor Kristin Linklater (1936 - 2020) was a world-renowned teacher of voice production. The Kristin Linklater Voice Centre at Housegarth is to close.

The Directors of the Centre regrettably have to announce the closure of the Centre and its facilities at Housegarth, Quoyloo. The Centre will cease its teaching activities with immediate effect.

The impact of Covid, restrictions on international travelling, and the worldwide economic recession have led to a severe reduction in the number of participants able to travel to Orkney for courses. While attempts to diversify the use of the Centre have been attempted there has been an insufficient number of bookings secured. At the same time, the cost of running the Centre has risen steadily to the point where it has become unviable as a business.

The Directors and the Centre's loyal staff have done their best over the last few months to reduce costs and keep the Centre open in view of the valuable training it offers. But with great sadness, they have had to admit that the prospects of its finances recovering in the immediate future are limited. Everything will be done to ensure employees are treated with fairness and with respect to their employment rights.

We will arrange to contact the workshop leaders due to attend in 2023 and those connected with planned academic and institutional residencies as soon as possible in the coming days. We would have liked to have done so prior to this announcement yet the number of meetings required to be held meant that this was not an equitable option.

A further announcement will be made as plans for the future of the house at Housegarth and its residential and teaching facilities become clearer.

We do hope that the preservation of Kristin’s legacy and the continuation of her work will still be able to continue through the efforts of the Kristin Linklater Voice Foundation.

The Centre may be contacted via [email protected] if required and we wish to thank everyone who has supported or attended the Centre since Kristin opened its doors in 2014.

A new residential workshop announcement for 2023.

The Speaking Body: Movement and Voice by Merry Conway and Alyssa Ciccarello.

A journey of embodied movement and voice, full of curiosity and delight, exploring connections between our verbal language and our physical language, and our inner and outer worlds. Interweaving the “swing” release movement work of Trish Arnold and the imagery into voice and language work of Kristin Linklater, we’ll explore perceptual dimensions and imagination, and move into selected poems.

“..and your very flesh shall be a great poem and have the richest fluency not only in its words but in the silent lines of its lips and face and between the lashes of your eyes and in every motion and joint of your body.” — Walt Whitman

Christmas as seen by George Mackay Brown

Explore this stunning online exhibition from The University of Edinburgh, based on Orkney poet George Mackay Brown's Christmas poems.

'A Dream of Snow'
In the essay ‘The Snows of Christmas’ (1972), Brown describes December as ‘a marvellous magical month’ in which a child exists ‘then and then only among the stars and the storms and the snow’. It does not matter that Orkney winters are generally snowless. In the world of the imagination ‘where a child lives half the time’, there is ‘always snow in winter’. When snow does fall, it turns Orkney into a ‘transfigured place’, sparking a ‘rare sweet wild ecstasy’.

The poem ‘Winter: An Island Boy’ captures this rapturous feeling, portraying a boy ‘lost on the hill till sun down | in a dream of snow’. While the boy experiences a sense of timelessness, Brown reminds us that Christmas is a symbol of rebirth, with the coming spring foreshadowed by the images of butterflies, birds, and flowers.

Peter Marciano & Courtney Ferguson workshop 2023.

Linklater into Phonetics: Feeling Sound

This Linklater-based workshop erupts into the world of Phonetics. Experience with Linklater Voice is not necessary. No experience with phonetics is necessary. The Sound and Movement exercises created by Kristin Linklater inspired Louis Colaianni to extend her work into the world of accents and so he created Phonetic pillows and explored this in his book The Joy of Phonetics and his upcoming book, Authentic Voice and Speech.

Launching into Phonetic Pillows from its origin of Sound and Movement allows participants to open the channels of the body to the senses. Have permission to experience their voice and accent through their entire bodies, allowing their vowels and consonants to literally jump, roll, dance, and be thrown around the room. With the assistance of associate teacher Courtney Ferguson, and myself, you will synthesize an environment where mindfulness is the pathway to your artistic force.
