The Learning Booth

The Learning Booth I offer personalised tutoring sessions for KS1&2 children in Reading, Writing, SPAG and Maths, as well as English for KS3 pupils.

All sessions are in line with the English National Curriculum objectives. I am a trained teacher with ten years experience teaching primary and secondary children.

For new starters, the first session will include an assessment so that each following session is specifically focused on every child's areas of need.

Each session can include homework, if parents/carers are happy with additional work.

Parents/carers will be given regular feedback on sessions, either in person or via messages, depending on personal preferences.

For those of you who haven't met The Learning Booth's mascot, this is Skye.

She loves our young learners coming to visit, belly rubs and playing outside.
Most of the time you will find her sleeping, but when she isn't, she will most likely be sat underneath the desk or be showing you her favourite toys.

"School dogs have been proven to help develop students' reading skills, improve behaviour, attendance and academic confidence, as well as increasing student understanding of responsibility and develop empathy and nurturing skills."

Skye has become a great friend to many of our students and has helped them engage with our sessions. One of the first things many students ask when they arrive is, "Where's Skye?" - that's if she's not already saying hello herself ☺️

For more information about our group sessions, or to be placed on our waiting list, or just to say Hi!, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

Tonight has been one of my favourite sessions!
🐨 and I have been learning all about exclamations, after weeks of looking at all the different sentence types.

❗Exclamations can be used to show excitement, anger, fear, a stern command or just general loudness!

We have verbally been creating our own exclamations, changing the tone of our voices to match the purpose of the exclamation.

I put my newly customised dice to good use so that 🐨 could choose his own sentence types to practise writing.
We used these gorgeous autumnal flashcards from Twinkl to use as the subject of our sentences.
What fantastic writing! How amazing!

And of course, we practised phonics using this fun interactive game, selecting the correct phonemes and digraphs to form words.

Today, we had loads of fun with our phonics and SPaG session! 🪴📚

🦔 was a superstar learning the 'ff' digraph. This is a tricky sound to apply to spellings as 'ff' makes the same sound as 'f'! So how are you supposed to know when to use 'ff' or 'f'?

🔤At the end of one-syllable words that have a vowel (a, e, i, o, u) IMMEDIATELY followed by either an f, l, or s or sometimes z, you MUST double the consonant.

We used these fab phonics flashcards to help 🦔 read and recognise words with the 'ff' spelling. We also played a game of 3 In A Row, to practice reading and writing the new vocabulary. Luckily for me, both games were a draw! 😅

In SPaG, we looked at COMMAS! What an amazing piece of punctuation! It can be used in so many ways. Today, we focused on using commas to separate items in a list.

We used these gorgeous flashcards to make our own Autumn themed lists. We built out sentences using a given sentence opener, a balloon (which looks remarkably like a comma!) and the word 'and'. 🦔 had a great time selecting the words to complete his list!

We have loved the fun and fabulous Place Value activities we have been using this week.
From knowing the value of digits to rounding to the nearest thousand, we have been working with one digit numbers to five digit numbers.

We try to use different practical, pictorial and written activities with our young learners so that they have experience tackling a wide range of problems and gain confidence by looking at Number in a variety of ways.

Tonight, we have had three eager learners who have been focusing on their phonics.

🐹 has been learning the shape and sound of 'b' and 'd' phonemes, playing a fun dice game to decide which words they needed to blend.

🐨 and 🐸 have been learning how to spell colour words. We have tried lots of different ways to learn the different spellings: reading with fluency and speed, word recognition, grouping words by their initial sounds and ordering them alphabetically.

In our third Creative Writing group session, we have looked at how to show emotions instead of just stating them.

This is a really powerful tool in descriptive writing, helping the reader to put themselves in the narrative.

Our amazing learners worked as a team to generate bodily reactions for our chosen emotions. We modelled how to weave these 'Show, Don't Tell' phrases into our abandoned house setting descriptions 🏚️

We look forward to starting our enchanted forest descriptions next week! 🌳🌲

We have been doing some amazing work, ticking off English and Maths objectives from the Year 1 curriculum.

🐹 has been able to use a number line with multilink cubes to count towards and backwards between 0 and 10.

He has been able to say, read and write the Phase 2 phonemes i, m, n and d, applying this knowledge to different written and practical phonics tasks. It was also a great opportunity to look at the shape and size of each letter when practising handwriting.

🐹 has also been able to use picture prompts and sentence openers to create full sentences about farm life.

What an absolute superstar! ⭐

In our second Creative Writing group session, we had two fantastic young learners tackling figurative language.

We looked at how to form expanded noun phrases, similes, onomatopoeia and personification to bring our setting descriptions alive.

🦖 and 🐧 chose vocabulary to create a spooky atmosphere for our abandoned houses.

They used their structured sentences to create their own setting description during an independent writing task.

Thursday saw some marvellous Maths work from 🦄 and 🐯!

🧮 We used Place Value columns to support 🦄 compare and order 4 & 5 digit numbers.

🔢 We have used Place Value discs and a number line to help 🐯 count in 25s and 100s.

Maths No Problems provides an amazing scheme of work, following the Concrete > Pictorial > Abstract format, helping children deepen their understanding of number.

We use other educational resources alongside Maths No Problem to create a rich, varied and engaging scheme of work for our young learners.

Tonight was our first session for the Creative Writing Group! And it was fantastic!

Well done to our amazing learners who showed amazing enthusiasm and an eagerness to learn.

In Session 1, we used video clips from favoured films to provide a stimulus for our abandoned house setting description.
The children generated vocabulary linked to what they could see and hear during the clips

We learned that synonyms can be used to provide us with richer vocabulary and we worked together as a group to develop synonyms for our key words.

We read an amazing setting description and identified the main features so that we know what we need to include in our own writing.

Finally, we looked at using the five senses to create descriptive phrases for the abandoned house.

We had some gorgeous vocabulary from our learners. 🦖 shared the word 'dilapidated' which we all loved. 🐧 wrote the phrase 'rancid scent of rotten eggs' and 🦊 shared, 'the scratching cats used their claws along the curtains'.

We can't wait to see what next week's session will bring.

If you are interested in group or 1:1 sessions for your child, contact Hope at The Learning Booth, based in Strines.

"If a child memorises 10 words, the child can only read 10 words.
But if a child learns 10 sounds, the child will be able to read 350 sound words, 4320 four sound words and 21650 five sound words."
- Martin Kozloff, 2002

Phonetic knowledge is key.

We have some fantastic, fun phonics resources to encourage blending, segmenting and an overall love of learning.

"Reading is the gateway for children that makes all other learning possible."
- Barack Obama

At The Learning Booth, we whole heartedly believe that an ability to read, and love of reading (whether that is through novels, comics, poetry, biographies, informative texts or lyrics) can broaden children's opportunity to access learning in all subject areas.

We have a library of quality texts that we use in Reading Skills sessions to develop fluency and comprehension. Those texts are so available for children to borrow and take home to read.
