At the Heart of the Matter ...
This is why the relationship is so very important. When the relationship is strong, we see the CHILD first - and we read their behaviour as a message (from within the child) telling us something about what's going on for them.

If we don't have a warm relationship with the child - or if it is temporarily ruptured and hasn't been repaired - all we can see is their behaviour because the connection with the heart of the child is not there. When we can soften into our Heart Intelligence, we can connect with the Heart Intelligence of the child that is speaking through the behaviour and we are better able to 'hear' what the child's behaviour is saying to us. (I know, sometimes it can seem a bit cryptic, but hang in there. This is us going to the 'next level' in our relationships skills. )

Behaviour is communication.

The more we can understand about the WHY behind behaviour, the more we can approach it with empathy, with understanding, with calm. The more we can do this, the more building blocks we give our children to learn how to regulate, to build resilience and to build self esteem šŸŒˆšŸ’š

Our children and grandchildren are shaped by the genes they inherit from us, but new research is revealing that experiences of hardship or violence can leave their mark too.

A great article about successfully using attachment informed practice in schools, for pupils strughling to regulate.

When children exhibit extreme behaviour, sanctions – and, eventually, exclusion – are usually the response from schools. But when this primary teacher implemented an attachment-informed approach in a bid to help one of her pupils, she found huge success
