Introducing Miss M Leung, the newest addition to Downside’s Mathematics team.

Miss Leung is enthusiastic about all things mathematics and can spend hours solving mathematical puzzles.

She attended our meeting of scholars last Thursday where we watched Harry Baker’s ‘Count on Creativity’ talk. This inspired her to write a short poem about the imaginary unit ℹ️:

ℹ️ am non-real, intangible, untouchable.
ℹ️ exist in the imaginary and magical world.
Whenever ℹ️ appear, ℹ️ make things complicated and complex.
ℹ️ am very sensitive, two of ℹ️ make real but negative, four of ℹ️ make real and positive.
Don’t say that ℹ️ am evil.
ℹ️ am just non-real, complex, and sensitive.

Day 4 of the Interhouse Chess Tournament.

Barlow, who are defending their title, have taken the lead with 7 pointts. But will they qualify to the final after Roberts play Caverel and Smythe play Isabella tomorrow afternoon? There’s only two points between the top four Houses.

The two highest scoring Houses will play in the final next Tuesday during one of our Giving Days.

Inter House Athletics today! The Mathematics department will be busy doing some data input to determine the winning houses fuelled by some wonderful Downside refreshments.

Many congratulations to Luis on winning the Somerset Chess Association Roy Hossell Trophy last weekend!

Luis took part in the Chess Frome Congress and played five games lasting roughly four hours each. He was the top Somerset player in the Intermediate Section.

Best of luck to our Upper Sixth pupils who will be on study leave from next week.

After an eventful two years and countless hours of remote and in-person learning, the A Level examinations are finally here.

This morning was the last lesson for many of them. There was cake, stories from the last two years and of course plenty of past paper questions!

A day late, but happy pi day from our Upper Sixth Mathematics scholar who is now able to recite pi to one hundred decimal places off by heart.

He was the first pupil to join the Pi Club instituted by Mr Bevan yesterday. Applicants had to recite the first thirty decimal places of pi to join the prestigious club.

Fr Michael taking his new Chaplaincy duties seriously, even when playing Scrabble during Monday afternoon activities. God is placed right at the centre of the board, whilst sin has been relegated to the bottom-right corner.

This morning, Jimmy (U6 Further Maths) taught a revision lesson on Similar Shapes to Dr Tapia’s 5B Mathematics class. His explanations were so interesting they even caught the attention of another U6 Further Mathematics pupil, Adam.

Love is in the air this Valentine’s Day.

The traditional roses and rolos were handed out in Houses during morning assemblies. It was lovely to see so many Maths jokes and equations feature in this year’s messages.

Our First Form and Second Form pupils really enjoyed taking part in the UKMT Anniversary Challenge last week.

Many congratulations to all for the commitment and enthusiasm they showed. Special congratulations to Viva and Ryan, our top scorers in First Form and Second Form, respectively.

We cannot wait for the Junior Mathematical Challenge in April!
