Often parents wait until nearer prelim time to look for a tutor, but this can often cause pupils a lot of stress and last minute panic.

If pupils work on technique and improve their knowledge and understanding from earlier in the academic year, they are much more confident by prelim time and therefore have a much better chance of achieving the grade of which they are capable.

Pupils can find it difficult to make the jump to the standard required for success at National 5 or Higher level, but the right intervention and support can make a huge difference.

I have limited sessions available in person in Strathaven or online.

Just a wee reminder about these sessions and the offer of a block of 4 for £100. These are suitable for age 10+. Suitable for getting ready to start Spanish at school, or just for fun! Also happy to help any older pupils prepare for the upcoming academic year with a wee refresher/extra help.

Is your child about to start learning Spanish at school? Why not give them a heads up with these jumpstart sessions from a GTC registered and PVG checked teacher with 20 years modern languages teaching experience?

In my many years of teaching languages, I have witnessed hundreds of children who are extremely capable shy away from fully participating in language lessons.

Speaking a foreign language in front of your peers (especially in S1 when you most likely don't know everyone in your class) can be extremely intimidating. It's easier to try to hide away or just give one word responses. Many pupils worry that they can't pronounce words properly or will get things wrong.

Often this issue builds over years and by the time pupils reach National 5 level, the thought of their Talking exam is terrifying.

So I thought...what if I could offer pupils some 1:1 Spanish sessions before they even start learning the language in class? What if just a few hours this summer could give them the very best start?

Sessions are available in person in Strathaven or online. Just send me an email on [email protected] or text me on 07734824150 for more info or to book.

Working with neurodivergent brains

There’s a common misconception that language learning is out of reach for many individuals who have neurodivergent brains. It is true that many individuals who are dyslexic, autistic, ADHD or have another type of neurodivergent brain may struggle to learn using more traditional teaching methods. This can lead to a lack of self belief and giving up before they’ve given it a real chance.

In reality, many neurodivergent traits can be extremely helpful when it comes to learning a language.

Lots of dyslexic individuals can use their problem solving skills to work out the meaning of new words based on context and begin to piece together how the language works. Many autistic people can use their attention to detail and pattern recognition to work out grammar rules and absorb vocabulary. Often learners with ADHD can hyperfocus and pick up a huge amount of information when a topic sparks their interest.

Sometimes you just need a different approach that works with an individual’s brain and not against it.

🇫🇷🇩🇪🇪🇸My languages journey🇫🇷🇩🇪🇪🇸

I started learning French in S1. I instantly loved it and was delighted to win the Speaking prize at the end of the year. In S2, German was added and again I really enjoyed it! After doing my Highers in French and German, I had the opportunity to do a crash Higher Spanish in S6. I had a native speaker as my teacher who spoke to us in Spanish the whole time and didn’t let us see any written language for months! It was quite an extreme method but it was so exciting and challenging. I just completely fell in love with the language.

I chose to study Interpreting and Translation at university with German and Spanish (with French as an elective in 1st and 2nd year). Studying Spanish was intimidating as many of my fellow students had been studying it for much, much longer than me. My year abroad was the making of me as a person, but also such an amazing opportunity to improve my language skills. Although most of the people I met in Germany weren’t native speakers, my German definitely improved. The months I spent in Soria were the perfect opportunity for me to properly bring my Spanish up to standard. By the time I left, I felt confident that I had reached a high level of proficiency. I was dreaming in Spanish and unable to find my words in English when I was on the phone! After my degree, teaching seemed a natural choice as I got on well with young people and I wanted a job in which I could help people. During my career, I have taught both languages but most years my timetable consisted of mostly Spanish up to Higher level. I love helping people start their language learning journey, get the hang of pronunciation, work out how the grammar works, gain confidence and experience the same joy I had when I was getting to grips with the language.

Send me an email on [email protected] or text me on 07734824150 if you’d like to start your journey learning Spanish.

I’m offering 2 hour intensive beginner sessions this summer (see previous posts). You don’t need to have a Spanish holiday booked to come along!
