VASA First Aid Training

Great Emergency First Aid at Work training session today with some wonderful volunteers of Warwickshire Pride. Well done everyone.

It's World First Aid Day, and the question worth asking is a simple one: if someone collapsed in front of you tomorrow, would you know what to do in those first few minutes?

Most people freeze. Not because they don't care, but because nobody ever showed them. That gap between wanting to help and knowing how to help is exactly what training closes.

VASA runs first aid courses across Warwickshire, from Emergency First Aid at Work to allergy and anaphylaxis awareness for schools. We're a local charity, so the money you spend on a course goes straight back into getting people to hospital appointments, to the shops, to see friends.

One day of your time. A lifetime of knowing you could act.

Yesterday we delivered Emergency First Aid at Work training to a brilliant team from Rugby Theatre.

When you teach first aid, you don’t usually expect to demonstrate it for real. But part way through the day we found ourselves helping an older lady who had fallen in the road, with cuts to her legs and arm and a nosebleed, treated there and then using the theatre’s first aid kit, with blankets to keep her warm while we waited for the ambulance.

It was a good reminder that first aid isn’t only about CPR. That’s an essential skill, but it’s the everyday accidents that are far more likely to be the ones we meet, and they can happen to any of us.

Well done to everyone who stepped in to help, and to the Rugby Theatre team who, despite the hour’s delay, still finished their training.

Don’t leave your school anaphylaxis training to chance!

💙 On Tuesday, we were delighted to deliver a Benedict's Law allergy awareness session at Alveston CofE Primary School

With Benedict's Law now in effect, it's fantastic to see schools like Alveston taking a proactive approach and ensuring staff feel confident and prepared to support children with allergies safely.

As we begin a new school year, many schools are welcoming new staff and pupils. Taking the time to refresh knowledge, ask questions and discuss real-life scenarios helps create a safer environment for everyone.

Our 1-hour face-to-face Benedict's Law sessions complement the online training and give staff the opportunity to:

✅ Ask questions in a relaxed and supportive environment
✅ Talk through real-life scenarios and concerns
✅ Build confidence in recognising allergic reactions and anaphylaxis
✅ Understand staff responsibilities under Benedict's Law
✅ Access practical guidance and additional resources
✅ Discuss the specific needs of their school community

📍 Available across South Warwickshire, Solihull and surrounding areas
⏰ Lunchtime and after-school sessions available
💷 As a charity, we keep our training affordable, and every booking helps support the valuable community services provided by VASA Community Transport.

A huge thank you to the team at Alveston Primary School for their warm welcome and commitment to keeping children safe.

If you'd like to ensure your school is meeting its responsibilities under Benedict's Law and that staff feel confident supporting pupils with allergies, we'd be happy to help.

Some great myth busting tips…

It was a hot, but great day!

34 degrees today. Officially the kind of heat that makes you want to lie very still in a darkened room.

But that didn’t stop the Community Partnership team from Warwickshire County Council, who spent the whole day with us completing their Emergency First Aid at Work training. Hot rooms, full concentration, and not a single complaint.

A huge thank you to everyone who took part and got through the day. Skills like these matter, and they matter even more when you’re willing to learn them in conditions like today’s.

Stay hydrated out there, everyone. 💧

Hot Weather Wellness ☀️

When it’s hot, the small habits matter most. Five things worth getting right:

Drink before you’re thirsty. Thirst is a late signal. By the time you feel it, you’re already behind. Keep a bottle within reach and sip through the day, more if you’re out on the road or in the garden.

Hide from the midday sun. Between 11am and 3pm is the worst of it. Pull the curtains in any south-facing room, get a fan going, and run your wrists under the cold tap or press a damp flannel to the back of your neck. It works faster than you’d think.

Cool the bedroom down. Hot nights wreck sleep. Open the windows once the evening air drops, ditch the duvet for a single sheet, and skip the coffee and w**e before bed. A few degrees cooler is the difference between tossing all night and actually resting.

Go easy on yourself. Heat frays the temper. If you’re snappy or wiped out or on edge, that’s the weather, not you. Naming it helps more than fighting it.

Knock on a door. Heat is hardest on people living alone, older neighbours, anyone managing a heart or breathing condition. One text, one phone call, one “how are you coping with this?” can be the thing that catches a problem early.

Look after yourself, and look after each other. 💙
