Helen Kirk Tutoring

Helen Kirk Tutoring Helen Kirk Tutoring provides a bespoke tutoring service for KS2 children. I am a primary school teacher with over twenty years of classroom experience.

During my career, I have taught across the whole primary age range, both as a class teacher and latterly as a supply teacher. As I am also a current classroom practitioner, my knowledge of the work children are expected to cover across Key Stage 2, and the teaching methods and resources used in schools, is very up to date. As a tutor, I can offer lessons in every aspect of the primary curriculum,

including 11+ preparation, tailored specifically to your child's needs. We will work together to identify areas for development and I will then plan our sessions to specifically target these points. Alongside helping your child to make academic progress, my other principal aim is to boost your child's confidence so that they feel better equipped to tackle their school work. I can give your child the individual attention they are not always able to receive in school. My fee is £35 per hour for a one-to-one session. If your child is part of a small group, the individual fee is reduced. For online lessons, I will provide a free welcome session so that we can get to know each other before we begin the tutoring sessions. I then require payment for a month in advance before lessons start. I regret that no refunds are given for cancellations, however if you wish to take a holiday in term time, I will credit you for the missed lessons from the following month's fees. I have an enhanced DBS certificate and my safeguarding training is up to date. I look forward to working with your child and supporting them in their journey through primary school. Please do not hesitate to give me a call, send me a message or contact me via email if you require any further information.

It’s that time of year again already, and what a brilliant year it’s been at Helen Kirk Tutoring! My 11+ plus crew have all been absolutely amazing. We’ve had lots of memorable moments during our sessions together, including chats about pets, the colour of strawberries (did you know that white strawberries are a thing?) and many lovely conversations about books we’ve enjoyed reading. We’ve worked very hard, but we’ve also laughed and had fun together.
Good luck for tomorrow everyone. I’m very proud of you all, and you should be very proud of yourselves. You are all stars!

Good luck to all my brilliant 11+ crew for tomorrow!
In between a lot of very hard work, we’ve had some hugely entertaining moments: memorable topics for discussion have included the various merits of playing football vs dance training, all things Disney, favourite crisp flavours, how to be a spy, pets (fish and hamsters in particular), lava lamps and much, much more!
The best comedy moment has to be when a flock of ducks waddled in to join the lesson-they were clearly non-verbal reasoning fans!
You have worked so hard and I am very proud of everything you have achieved. I will miss you all. 😘

We’re already half way through the summer holidays (gulp!) and lessons are continuing here at Helen Kirk Tutoring. The 11+ crew are doing brilliantly with their practice papers, and general primary tuition is also ticking over nicely.
Are you thinking of 11+ or primary tuition for your child in September? Contact me because I still have a few places left.

Wishing a very happy summer holiday to all children breaking up this week. I still have a few places left for either holiday catch-up lessons or a September start. Were there areas highlighted for development in your child’s school report? Are you thinking about extra help for them next term? Message or phone me for a chat.

Elements of the 11+, in no particular order, part four:
Last, but by no means least, is English. Children need to have excellent reading comprehension skills, a wide vocabulary and a sound knowledge of parts of speech to score well here. Do you know your similes from your metaphors? Can you use apostrophes correctly? How is your spelling?
Get in touch because I can help!

Elements of the 11+, in no particular order, part three:
Maths - the children need a thorough knowledge of the Year 5 maths curriculum, but they also need to be capable of tackling many of the maths topics that do not come up in school until Year 6, such as algebra, ratio, proportion, and long division.
This is where I can help. Everyone loves fractions, decimals and percentages when they understand them!

Elements of the 11+, in no particular order, part two:
Verbal reasoning is a big topic, involving answering questions that are mostly about words and letters. Codes, letter and number sequences, hidden words and much more all fall into this category. Oh, and how good are you at synonyms and antonyms? Phew! There’s so much to cover in verbal reasoning, but we always manage to get there!

Elements of the 11+ test, in no particular order, part one:
Non-verbal reasoning is problem solving using pictures and patterns. It’s like marmite for most children, but I can teach strategies to improve your child’s accuracy and speed.
Love it or hate it, we always try to make it fun!

I've had several enquiries asking about the benefits of online tutoring, so here are a few thoughts:

It works brilliantly!

The quality of tuition and learning are identical to a face-to-face session.

Your child will be learning at home in an environment in which they feel safe and secure.

You do not need to ferry your child across town in the rush hour traffic.

I always do a free welcome session with both you and your child so that we can get to know each other before our lessons begin. That way I can get an idea of the areas we will work on together, and I am not just a strange face on the other side of a screen - or hopefully not too strange!

Please phone, message or email me if you have any questions. I'm always happy to chat and help if I can.

Once again it’s been a busy year at Helen Kirk Tutoring. Memorable highlights include football chat, chimney sweep costumes, dinosaur facts, cats on the keyboard, info about the ancient Greeks, random emojis and tractors stuck in the mud. In between these events, we’ve worked very hard together on maths, English, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning. Very well done to all of you! I am very proud of you and I know your adults are too. You are all winners, no matter what the outcome of this weekend is. Thank you for being so delightful to work with. I will miss you all greatly.
