The siting of this piece has taken some time, but now its done I am very happy with it and its position. There was a fair amount of work done in its placement. I deferred the design of the base to Ruskin Mill architects, they then deferred it to a building engineer, the spec for the foundation they came back with was technically challenging, the foundation plinth is a stepped design and over a meter thick in C3 spec concrete, they also wanted it to sit on two 16mm rebar steel pins, I've done similar before, and I know that drilling by eye will never be accurate enough, so I built a scaffold frame which I invested in the concrete plinth, which then accommodates the rebar. This gives me a +/- tolerance of about 3 degrees when the rebar pins are dropped in; It was necessary. I couldn't lay the piece down for drilling I had to do it with the piece raised up in the air. It weighs 2 tons, so you don't want it too high on the forklift as the leverage will tip it over and I would have been killed, not to mention its dangerously sketchy to be drilling under a load like that anyway. The position of the foundation base is at an angle, and I used the GS ratio of 1:1.618 when locating it in relation to the building. Another issue is that the forklift can only travel on solid ground, look at how far into the soil area I have the piece and you will realise that having two tons extended that far and as high as we needed it to be to clear the top of the rebar pins presented the very maximum we could achieve without loading weight onto the rear of the forklift. Lastly is the issue of drawing out the lifting forks when the piece is down without damaging the bottom or the carving, this was achieved by casting two negative channels into the top step of the base giving the forks 10mm each side and 5mm clearance on top. Anyway, those challenges aside, it went pretty smoothly and the rebar fit turned out to be perfect - maxed out on the tolerance, but within it - and we had one inch spare on the reach.

The Maze, installed yesterday at Mrs Addison's place, Stottesdon Shropshire. Beautiful garden!
2 of 2. not completely finished, but nearly there. I've only ever come across two pieces of the sandstone I have carved for the lower part, really love the smokey and fluid colouration and I agonized over those pebbles! The quarry guys had to actually make a road with the big digger to get that piece of slate for me - always an anxious, exciting, and rewarding experience up in North Wales - I love my job :-)
Some of today's work, 1 of 2, two types of slate and cotswold limestone. Wild iron colours in this one.
This has been like working with Gorgonzola! In the pursuit of new experiences with stone I've had a go with the most mixed up material so far: part soft ashy slate, some iron and quartz all in the same piece, I'm making some new tea-light holders and want a really natural feel, i'll be working the edges with some pattern work - if the stuff will allow me!
