Toddlers have been practising independent skills, by helping to get their own chairs out for snack and then give out the bowls and cups to each other and practising the sign for thank you and please.

The children were encouraging each other to use please and thank you, showing each other the sign.

After snack they even washed and dried their own bowls and cups, identifying we need soap to make them clean and sponges to do this with.

This morning in toddlers, we have been WATER PAINTING! We experimented with some dishes of water and some paint tablets. They worked together to mix the water into the paint tablet to create their colour for their brush. Additionally, they have been using their imagination skills to give meanings to their marks. “I’m making my purple house Livvie”, “little baby pumpkin”, “triangle”, “big blue circle”, “star”, “red car”, “turtle” etc.

This morning we have enjoyed colour mixing, we spoke about what colours we use to mix together to get our desired outcome.

The children added cars to mix all the colours together, pushing them from opposite sides of the tuff pit to each other and back. Children were encouraged to shout out colours they could see and predictions on what colours were going to be made in the process.

Recently, in toddler room we have been celebrating “World Dental Health Month”. We have focussed on this through the use of a teeth-brushing activity. We used some toothbrushes, water jugs, soapy water and some baby dolls. The children used these resources to scrub and brush the baby dolls teeth. We sang “this is way we brush our teeth, brush our teeth, brush our teeth, this is the way we brush our teeth, when we go to nursery” from a talk boost session this morning.

The children role modelled to each other how to brush the babies teeth using vocabulary such as “brushing”, “scrub, scrub, scrub”, “soap”, “bubbles POP!”, “clean now”, “dirt all gone now”. We also spoke to the children about dental hygiene and how we keep our teeth clean at home.

Supporting our children’s interests with the use of; reflective materials, various textured items, colourful and dull objects, wooden and woven balls, small paper bags and wooden boxes.
We were able to support PSED (Personal, Social & Emotional), C&L (Communication & Language) and UTW (Understanding The World) development. connections were made between how to use the items, what could be done with them and how we can use our bodies to move them around.

We introduced key words such as; Spin, Roll, Turn, Twist, Dark, Light, Hard, Soft; to extend upon children’s attention and attempts at repeating sounds or short singular words during play.

We also looked at opportunities where reflections, rolling and rotation were involved when exploring the different items available

Toddlers have been speaking about our emotions and expressing our feelings to our peers and practitioners. “I’m feeling happy today”, “sometimes I sad when I tired”, “I excited to see my mommy”, “I am cheeky”.

The children worked together to ask each other how they were. We used the Makaton sign “how are you?”, “happy”, “sad”, “scared”, “shy”, “frightened”, “excited”. The children reacted by looking in the mirrors and smiling, frowning or pulling funny facial expressions. We then recognised some different feelings from picture cards also.

We have enjoyed exploring our construction role play tuff tray, we have been developing our understanding of what diggers do and reading a story all about cars and vehicles. The children have also enjoyed developing their language and sensory development mimicking grass with thyme and green glitter.

The children in Pre-School are using scissors to practice their cutting skills. They are persisting at this very tricky skill, this is a difficult element of the Characteristics of Effective learning. They have done such a good job and have worked as a team to motivate each other to persist and work through the challenges.

With Hannah and Rachel we created our own dinosaur muddy tuff spot!

We used bark, leaves, tissue paper and soil to create different textures to enhance our senses. The children used words such as ‘wet’ ‘hard’ ‘crunch’ ‘stomp’, we explored the garden and learnt why we need to wear our wellies, coats, gloves and scarves.

In toddler room, we have recently been talking about our emotions, here our little ones are expressing 'angry' and 'excited'! We have been confidently saying whether we feel happy, sad, angry, grumpy, excited, scared etc.

The children have been working together to recognise their feelings and to ask each other how we feel. We have been showing each other the Makaton sign for ‘happy’, ‘sad’, ‘angry’, ‘excited’, ‘scared’.

World Book Day

Did you know that children develop more rapidly during the first 5 years of their lives than at any other time?
It’s true.

That’s why this crucial period is known as ‘the foundation years.’ If you nurture certain skills during these first 5 years, you create a solid foundation from which your child can build on for the rest of their life. Think of it as giving them a head start to learning.

Literacy is one of those skills that parents can nurture in those early years. Why literacy? Because reading and writing are the fundamentals of early education, not to mention that they crop up multiple times every single day. From reading road signs and writing shopping lists to learning a new language, literacy is a skill that is vital for everyone. Stimulating your young child’s brain cells through these early experiences will help them to become better listeners, readers, and communicators as well as instilling a lifelong love of learning.

Talking about that lifelong love of learning, that is why reading is important at such an early age. When children learn to read at an early age, they have greater general knowledge, a wider range of vocabulary, they are more fluent readers, and they have improved attention spans and better concentration. As well as stronger oral and literacy skills, proficiency in reading also allows young children to understand more, to learn more, and to become competent researchers.

At Little Hands, we promote reading and literacy through everything we do. From our book of the month, circle times, our communication and language / literacy room, to our lending library, talk boost and many more! We want children to enjoy reading and seek out books on their own or with peers!

Therefore, on Thursday 3rd March )World Book Day) we would like to encourage you to really focus on reading with your little one at home and evaluate how much time you spend looking at books with them, or them having access to literacy materials at home. We are encouraging all parents to send in their child’s favourite book they love to read and we can share these in our group times. Also, we will send you some book reviews to complete so we can evaluate which kind of books the children love and how we can implement these more into our curriculum.’

In 0-2’s we have been exploring the outdoors indoors!
We have brought the wet puddles in to have lots of fun splashing! We tried really hard to put on wellies and used our whole bodies to splash in the water, using lots of new language like “splosh” “splash” and “jump”.

We enjoyed looking at how we could make the water move and also looking out of the window to see the similarities in the rain and the water we were splashing in. After this we read a story called A Rainy Day, we enjoyed looking at the children jumping in the puddles!

Timeline photos 24/02/2022

We used our new song spoons, we each held one and recognised what we could see on the spoon. We all recognised lots of the song lyrics too and the makaton signs to go alongside!

We used the music CDs to participate in large physical exercise songs, such as head shoulders knees and toes and move freeze!
