Each week we have 7 Woodland Friends Programmes running across 7 schools. This programme has been developed to provide a loose structure but always ensuring that the experienced forest school leaders can adapt to the individual needs of the children as well as allow for child led play.
Using story as part of our structure it gives children that spark to fire imaginations and enhance the connection to nature.
This week we focussed on the power of connection. Connection to nature, to each other and ourselves. Connection helps us feel safe, we belong and we are worthy. We can see where we fit in and through this lived experience we can express how we feel.
This often leads to beautiful conversations that are led by the children as we enjoy our snack around the fire. Together we can share how we manage our feelings and understand that all feelings are ok.
There are often misunderstandings of how powerful forest school is but when you experience it for real you can’t unsee its magic.
Here’s just a snippet of what has happened this week!
At Amblecote, We started with the story of the Happiness Tree, which had everyone captivated, before making our own happiness crowns. Some children even discovered their very own glitter worms!
We made our own journals, built a massive den and cooked pancakes over the fire with strawberries and chocolate sauce.
We also practised some breathing techniques to help us when we’re feeling angry, giving us a few tools to help manage those big feelings.
Whilst at Rufford , From guiding blindfolded friends to hug a tree and feel the earth beneath our feet, to beginning our journaling journey, cooking popcorn over the fire and enjoying The Happiness Tree.
We finished with a game of Sneaky Bob and discovered something lovely — everyone had played with someone new, making new friendships and connections.
Together we connect to our world, each other and ourselves and Together we can feel better.
