25 years ago today I stepped into my very first classroom as a qualified teacher. I can still remember it so clearly: the excitement of having my own space, my name on the door, making sure every board, tray and reading corner looked just right.

Alongside that excitement was the overwhelming nervousness of knowing it was just me in front of thirty brand new faces. The realisation that I was going to play such a huge role in their lives, and that I had to live up to the high expectations I had set for myself.

My time in the classroom was so precious. I loved every minute - the challenges, the laughter, and most of all those magical ‘light bulb’ moments that made it all worthwhile.

I’ll always carry those memories with me, and today I’m feeling especially grateful for the journey that started all those years ago as it has brought me to where I am now. 💜

🧠 VERBAL REASONING IN ACTION 🧠

Let’s talk about one of the trickier skills our students face - verbal reasoning (VR).

It’s not just about vocabulary, it’s about logic, attention to detail, and understanding the meaning behind words. And for many children, it can feel like a mountain to climb.

Here’s a real example of the kind of question we help our students tackle:

Find the odd one out.
Which word does NOT belong in the group?
a) cautious
b) reckless
c) careful
d) wary
e) alert

Take a moment to think about it…

🔍 The answer is: b) reckless
Why? All the other words suggest being careful, aware, and thoughtful. ‘Reckless’ is the opposite - it means being careless and taking unnecessary risks.

This is what we love about teaching verbal reasoning, it’s like unpicking a puzzle. It’s not just about getting the right answer, but about understanding why.
