A heatwave is not pleasant in a school, especially one with so much glass! The Apperley students and staff learned about keeping cool in a practical way this afternoon; some sitting sedately with their feet cooling in a pool, some choosing a more dynamic way to reduce the body temperature of themselves and others.

We are grateful for the support we have received from parents and carers as we close to students tomorrow and Thursday; we look forward to seeing years 12 & 13 back on Friday, and year 14 on Monday.

We are incredibly proud of our Headteacher, Rachel Stephens, who last night was awarded Teacher of the Year at the Stroud News and Journal Community Awards 2026.
This is a fantastic and very well-deserved achievement for Rachel. Her dedication and leadership make a real difference to our school community every day.
Rachel is now on the hunt for the kind person who nominated her — please do come forward if it was you!

Last week Councillor Gill Thomas visited The Shrubberies and donated 40 littler pickers and some lovely books. Pupils have already been out using the litter pickers in the community as part of the Little Pickers School Network.

Friday has been a wonderful end to Wow Week! Students have had Big Art, bowling, swimming and a chance to fly kites and eat home-grown strawberries with ice-cream!

Having a week of chaos is a lot to cope with, but every student has managed so well, and I am incredibly proud of them all for embracing all the opportunities.

Of course, The biggest 'Thank-you' and 'Well done' must go to the Apperley staff team. Giving up lunch breaks, working additional hours, coping with Jude's appalling planning and supplying kites, camping chairs and numerous other items from their own homes. Please do take time to pop them a message on here which they will all see: I hope they are all at home with a well-earned cup of tea!

Signing out for now- (A slightly tired) Lady Jude x

Wow Week Wednesday saw the Apperley crew take over the Sherborne Cinema in Gloucester. All families were invited to join; mums, dads, carers, siblings, students and staff all enjoyed the chance to come together as one.
Following an exclusive showing of an absolute classic (The Super Mario Galaxy Movie) The crew journeyed to a nearby park for a picnic; thankfully avoiding the showers!
It was so wonderful to see so many people all joining together for a truly inclusive event.
More photos to follow tomorrow when I'm able to access them!

Alongside all the first aid fun yesterday, the Apperley students also spent time learning about the importance of protection from external forces..... using the medium of eggs!

Working in Egg-citingly named teams, students created a vessel for an egg to take a tumble in. Rachel was summoned to ensure a fair testing process and (following ladder training and a risk assessment) dropped them from a dizzying height!

The eggs all survived, showing the students took great care in their constructions, and we all had a lot of fun in the process! It was lovely to see the teams bond, and the egg-citement as the packages were dropped was wonderful to see!

Egg-cellent work Apples!

Tuesday of Wow Week saw us developing our awareness of first aid at The Apperley Centre. We enjoyed a visit from three lovely paramedics; Luca, Kate and Charlie who brought their ambulance for us to explore. We then had practical first aid sessions led by Jane, who taught us all about bandaging!

The Apperley students are now prepared for all medical emergencies; and had a lot of fun in the process. A huge thank you to Lauren, Luca, Kate, Charlie and Jane for helping us.
