Do you work with children, provide childcare, or run a baby or children’s business…

Would you know what to do if something unexpected happened?

A child choking.
A serious allergic reaction.
A seizure.
A burn.
A head injury.
A child who becomes unresponsive.

In an emergency, those first few moments can feel overwhelming - but having the knowledge and confidence to act can make all the difference.

And with updates to paediatric first aid guidance this year, it's a good time to make sure your knowledge is up to date too.

My upcoming Qualsafe Emergency Paediatric First Aid course is designed for people who work with or care for children and want to feel more confident dealing with those unexpected situations.

📅 Saturday 26th September
📍 Regent Quay, Aberdeen
💷 £70

Successful completion comes with a 3-year certificate, giving you peace of mind that your qualification is in place.

Spaces are still available. If you'd like more information or would like to book, head over to our website, or drop me a message 💚

Looks like we're in for some unusually warm weather over the next few days! ☀️

Here are some helpful tips from Aberdeenshire Health Visitors on keeping babies and children safe & comfortable in the heat.

Stay safe and enjoy the sunshine! ❤️

With the hot weather coming to the North East of Scotland shortly, please see our infographic to keep your wee ones safe in the sun and the heat.

Please be aware that we urge caution even when giving a small amount of water on a hot day to formula fed babies because too much water can be dangerous

For young infants (especially under 6 months):

* Formula already contains the right amount of water. Properly prepared formula provides both hydration and nutrition.
* Extra water can dilute the sodium in a baby’s bloodstream, leading to a condition called Water Intoxication (hyponatremia). This can cause irritability, drowsiness, low body temperature, seizures, and in severe cases can be life-threatening.
* Water fills the baby’s stomach without providing calories or nutrients, so they may drink less formula and not get enough nutrition.
* Babies’ kidneys are still immature and are less able to handle excess water than older children or adults.

In hot weather, a formula-fed baby usually needs:

* More frequent feeds if they seem thirsty.
* Formula mixed exactly according to the instructions—never diluted to provide extra water.
* Protection from heat (shade, light clothing, cool environment).

If a baby is under 6 months old and you’re concerned they’re dehydrated or struggling in hot weather, it’s best to seek advice from your HV or GP rather than giving extra water routinely.
