Did you know the HSE requires every workplace to have "adequate and appropriate" first aid cover — and that depends on your risks, team size and site, not a one-size-fits-all rule?

As a working frontline EMT, I can tell you the difference a properly trained first aider makes is huge. What happens in those first few minutes, before an ambulance arrives, really does shape the outcome.

If you're not sure your workplace first aid cover stacks up, or your certificates are due for renewal, we're here to help — real-world training from someone who does this for real, not just classroom theory.

September's here, the kids are back at school, and building sites and workplaces across Staffordshire are getting back into full swing after the summer lull. It's also the time of year we get the most calls about first aid training - new starters who haven't been trained yet, or certificates that quietly ran out over summer without anyone noticing.

If that sounds like your workplace, now's a good time to sort it before it becomes a problem. We run EFAW, FAW, Basic Life Support & AED and Mental Health First Aid courses right here in Staffordshire - either at your workplace or through our public course at Yarnfield Park, Stone. All taught by Jay, a working frontline EMT, so it's real-world training, not just a textbook.

Bit of a stormy one out there today, with a thunderstorm warning in place for Stone and the surrounding area! If you or your team are working outside today — on site, in a garden, at an outdoor event — a couple of quick reminders:

Get under proper cover away from trees and metal fencing when you hear thunder, and watch your footing on wet or flooded ground — storms cause a real spike in slips and falls.

And a myth-buster: if someone is struck by lightning, it's safe to touch them straight away and start CPR if needed — they don't hold a charge.

As someone who deals with these calls for real as a frontline EMT, it's amazing how much difference having one confident first aider on site makes. That's exactly what our courses are built around.

Stay dry out there, Staffordshire! 03300 102102 | www.respondertraining.uk

Did you know that starting CPR straight away - before the ambulance even arrives - can double or triple someone's chance of survival after a cardiac arrest?

As a working frontline EMT, it's something I see the real difference of on shift. Those first couple of minutes, before we get there, matter more than almost anything else. And it's not complicated - hard, fast pushes in the centre of the chest, and don't stop.

That's exactly what we cover on our first aid courses here at Emergency Care Training, based near Stone. Whether it's a work team wanting on-site training or an individual after a certificate on our public EFAW course at Yarnfield Park, we'll make sure you leave confident enough to actually act if it ever happens in front of you.

It's a scorcher out there today — 32°C forecast for Stone and the surrounding area! 🌡️

As a working EMT, I always see more heat-related call-outs when it gets like this. Quick refresher: heat exhaustion is sweating, dizziness and headache — get the person cool, shaded and hydrated. Heatstroke is more serious — hot dry skin, confusion, no sweating — that's a 999 call, no messing about.

If you're out and about today (or know someone working outdoors), keep an eye on each other and don't ignore the early signs.

Ever wonder what makes a good first aid trainer? It's not just someone with a certificate to teach - it's someone who's actually been there.

Jay, who runs Emergency Care Training, is still out on the road as a frontline ambulance clinician. So when you're on one of our courses, you're not getting recycled textbook stories - you're getting real, current experience from calls attended just weeks before.

Whether it's a workplace incident, a collapse, or just knowing what to do in those first scary minutes before help arrives, that hands-on experience makes all the difference.

We run public EFAW courses at Yarnfield Park in Stone, plus on-site training for businesses across Staffordshire who'd rather we come to them.
