I’ve just come back from 2 days of competitive golf, playing in the oldest professional event The Leeds Cup and if I’m being completely honest, the first round has got to be up there with one of the worst rounds of competitive golf I’ve ever played.

Looking back, a lot of that came down to the pressure I’d put on myself in the build-up to the event… and then carried onto the course.

I didn’t hit enough greens, and when the course is firm, you quickly realise that if you miss the target, the ball can bounce absolutely anywhere. It just was a day where I felt uncomfortable over the ball worried about where the ball was going & didn’t enjoy my golf.

But then came round 2.

I took a lot of the pressure off myself, stopped worrying so much about the outcome as I was nowhere near the leaders and simply tried to enjoy playing golf again.

And unsurprisingly… I played a lot better. I hit better shots, made better decisions and, most importantly, enjoyed it a lot more.

After reflecting on the two days, I’ve actually learnt a huge amount. It’s a reminder that golf isn’t just about having a great technique. The mental side of the game can have a massive impact on how we perform.

I spend so much time helping my players deal with their own expectations, pressure and confidence, but it’s important to remember that I’m still learning and dealing with exactly the same things myself.

Competitive golf has a funny way of showing you where you need to improve. This time, it wasn’t necessarily my golf swing.

And honestly, I’m glad I experienced it.

Another +1 round in yesterdays North East and North West PGA Matfen Hall pro am, some good stuff but unfortunately followed by some bad stuff. Just the way my game is at the moment 🤷‍♂️ however, it’s heading in the right direction!

Thought the course was brilliant, surfaces on the new 9 greens where considerably better than a few weeks back 👏

Nothing better than a cheeky goodie back with a naughty Johnnie Walker whisky 🥃

Onto Leeds Cup in a few weeks.

Very up and down day in North East and North West PGA Middlesbrough Pro am, finishing up with 71 (+1)! To have 5 birdies on your card and still shoot over par is extremely frustrating 🤦‍♂️

However some real positives in there, course was firm bouncy fairways & swirling wind in spots. Looking forward to Matfen Hall pro am next week 👏

After having a few days to reflect on Tuesday’s performance at Matfen Hall in the Northumberland & Durham Open, I quite simply didn’t have it. 🤷‍♂️

In tough, windy conditions, with thick rough, playing off the black tees, and some extremely undulating greens, when you’re not hitting the ball well it’s always going to be difficult to score.

I’ve always shared my tournament results—good or bad—because I want to be transparent about how difficult this game is, no matter what level you’re playing at. There are times when it feels like you’ve cracked it, but golf has a way of bringing you back down to reality 👍

Round 1: +10 (82)
Round 2: +9 (81)

Time to get back to the grind, put the work in during practice, and prepare for the next event. 🏌️

Well yesterday was one windy round of golf, from reaching greens on par 4s downwind to then hitting driver, driver into wind par 5s it was difficult to get a good score going!

Finished up with 75 (+3) with an eagle & 2 birdies just unfortunately ended up with too many errors 🫣

Thought the golf course was the best I’ve ever seen rockliffe in the years I’ve played it, work they have done with the bunkers & the greens where 👌

Onto next weeks 36 holes order of merit event at Matfen Hall 🤞
