Children can find something extraordinary in places adults have learned to walk straight past.

A puddle becomes something to splash through and investigate.
A pine cone becomes a treasure.
A leaf becomes something to collect, compare, count or carry around proudly for the rest of the afternoon.
And sometimes the most meaningful thing we can do is resist the urge to hurry them along.

Pause.
Notice what they noticed.
Ask what they can see.
Wonder about it with them.
Children do not always need a planned activity for learning to happen.

Curiosity, movement, conversation and exploration can turn the most ordinary moment into something worth remembering.

At New Beginnings at Penkhull, we value these everyday experiences because childhood is full of opportunities to learn when children are given the time and freedom to notice them.

When you are small, even a puddle can feel like a whole new world.

Your next weekend activity may already be lying on the pavement outside.

For this week’s simple activity, try making a DIY Leaf Sorting Tray. Take a little walk together and collect a few leaves in different colours, shapes and sizes.

Then bring them home and ask:
🍂 Which ones look alike?
🍃 Which is the biggest?
🍁 Can you group them by colour?
🌿 Which leaf feels different?

There is no need to tell your child exactly how they should sort them either. Let them invent their own groups. Their reasoning might surprise you.

Activities like this encourage children to look closely, compare, make choices and explain their thinking all while using something completely free from the world around them.

The activity starts with a walk and ends wherever their imagination takes it.

Try it this weekend and let us know what your little one decided to sort first.

Early maths does not always begin with numbers on a worksheet. Sometimes it begins with a handful of colourful blocks on the table.

When children sort objects, compare sizes, notice shapes or decide which pieces belong together, they are already using important early maths skills.

They are beginning to notice:
Size.
Shape.
Colour.
Quantity.
Pattern.
Similarity.
Difference.

And because they can physically move, group and compare the objects themselves, these ideas become much easier to understand.

At New Beginnings at Penkhull, we love creating opportunities for children to experience early maths naturally through play, conversation and everyday materials.

To a child, it may simply look like playing with blocks and shapes. Underneath it, there is an enormous amount of thinking happening.

If you are looking for a nursery where learning is woven naturally into meaningful everyday experiences, use the contact details below to arrange a visit.

That pocket full of leaves, conkers and little outdoor treasures your child insists on bringing home? Keep them.

They can become some of the simplest play materials you already have.
Try sorting leaves by colour or size.
Count conkers into small groups.
Make patterns.
Compare shapes.
Talk about which objects feel smooth, rough, heavy or light.
You could even use the leaves for printing, collage or matching games.
The activity does not need to be complicated.

Children often learn most when they can touch, move, compare and make their own decisions about ordinary objects.

At New Beginnings at Penkhull, we love encouraging children to notice the world around them because curiosity does not need to come from an expensive toy or carefully packaged activity.

Sometimes it is already waiting underneath a tree.

What does your little one always insist on collecting when you’re outside?

The moment worth celebrating is not always when they finally succeed. Sometimes it is when they decide to try again.

The tower that stayed standing one block longer.
The coat they almost managed independently.
The puzzle piece they kept turning until it finally fitted.
These moments can look tiny to us, but to a young child they can mean:
“I’m getting better at this.”

When adults notice the effort behind the result, children begin to understand that progress matters just as much as getting something right the first time. Simple words such as “You kept trying” or “Look how much easier that was today” can help children recognise their own growth.

At New Beginnings at Penkhull, we value the small steps because confidence and resilience are built gradually through opportunities to practise, make mistakes, try again and feel proud of progress.

Small progress is still progress and sometimes it is exactly where confidence begins.

Some nursery days really do have a little bit of everything — baking, building, rolling, creating, pretending, exploring and plenty of moments where the children simply follow an idea and see where it takes them.

At New Beginnings Penkhull, we love days like this because every activity brings out something different. One child might be carefully whisking ingredients, another completely focused on building a track, while someone else is deep in role play, creating their own little world.

These experiences give children so many chances to make choices, practise new skills, share ideas and grow in confidence. There’s no pressure for every child to enjoy the same thing the beauty is in giving them different opportunities to discover what catches their interest.

And that’s what makes nursery life so special: one moment can be calm and focused, the next full of laughter, movement and imagination.

If you’re looking for a nursery where your child can explore, create, play and feel genuinely excited about their day, we’d love to welcome you for a visit.

Sometimes “What did you do today?” is simply too big a question for a little person.

A nursery day can be full of people, play, conversations, choices and new experiences. When children get home, they may need a little time before they know what they want to tell you.

Instead of asking for the whole day at once, try one small question:
“What made you smile today?”
“Who did you play with?”
“What was your favourite thing?”

Then pause.
Give them time to think rather than filling the silence for them. You can even share something from your own day first. Children often find conversation easier when it feels like a two-way exchange rather than a question-and-answer session.

At New Beginnings at Penkhull, we know that communication grows through feeling heard, understood and given time to respond.

If you are looking for a nursery where your child will be known as an individual, listened to and encouraged to find their own voice, we would love to welcome you for a visit.

The person who knows your child best should never feel like a stranger to the people caring for them.

Parents see one side of a child's world. Nursery practitioners see another.

When those two sides communicate, children benefit from adults who understand more of the whole picture.

Perhaps your child had a difficult night.
Perhaps something at home has changed.
Maybe they have suddenly developed a new interest or started using a new word.
Likewise, nursery may notice a new friendship, a moment of confidence or something your child has particularly enjoyed.

Those conversations matter.

At New Beginnings at Penkhull, we believe parents and practitioners should work as partners because settling, learning and development do not happen in isolation.

When children experience familiar expectations, reassurance and communication between the important adults around them, the journey between home and nursery can feel more connected.

Choosing a nursery is not only about choosing a building. It is about choosing the people who will work alongside you during some of your child's most important early years.

If you are considering nursery, come and meet our team, ask the questions that matter to you and see whether New Beginnings at Penkhull feels right for your family.

Before children can tell us exactly how they feel, they first have to begin recognising what those feelings look and feel like.

This weekend, turn that learning into something creative with a simple DIY Feelings Faces activity.

Grab some paper, crayons or colouring pencils and create different faces together.
Try:
😊 Happy
😢 Sad
😠 Angry
😮 Surprised
😟 Worried

While you draw, ask little questions:

“What might make this person happy?”
“What could make someone feel sad?”
“What helps you when you feel worried?”

You do not need perfect answers. The purpose is simply to give children opportunities to hear emotion words, notice facial expressions and begin connecting those words with their own experiences.

At New Beginnings at Penkhull, emotional development is supported through everyday conversations, relationships and playful experiences that help children gradually understand themselves and others.

Try it at home and ask your little one: “Which face are you today?”

Some of the skills children will use for years can begin in a few simple minutes sitting together on a nursery floor.

During group time, children have opportunities to listen to someone else, wait for a turn, respond to a question, watch their friends and understand when it is their moment to join in.

But there is another important part happening too. They are learning what it feels like to belong to a group.

Recognising the same songs, hearing familiar names, seeing their friends beside them and taking part in a shared experience can gradually help children become more comfortable participating with others.

At New Beginnings at Penkhull, group experiences are not about expecting every child to sit and respond in exactly the same way.

They are opportunities to listen, contribute, observe and gradually grow in confidence. Those little moments of waiting, listening and joining in can become the foundations for communication and social confidence far beyond nursery.

If you would like to see how everyday experiences are used to support your child's development at New Beginnings at Penkhull, get in touch and arrange a visit.
