Life’s A Rainbow
Your mini-me has started the wonderful journey into colours. Everybody loves a rainbow song or a car ride, the classic ‘What colour is that car?’.
But pointing gets old, we get bored of asking and I’m sure they get bored of answering. Two different activities I like to use for learning/teaching colours are as follows.
Colour boxes
I advise to only do two or three colours at a time so not to over complicate it. You’ll need either the colour boxes you want or cardboard boxes that you can paint in your chosen colours. Next step is the toy search, find out as many of your child’s toys that are of this colour. For example, you have red, blue and green boxes so you’ll need to find red, blue and green toys.
Make a mess, have a play but when it comes to the tidy up have some fun! Get your little ones to put the toys in the matching colour boxes. It’s a winner all round play, tidy and learn!
Big and Baby
My second and personal favourite is big and baby. I’ll use the example of a little boy I used to take care of, he has a dinosaur obsession, everything is dinosaurs or it just isn’t interesting.
So I drew nine big dinosaurs and nine baby dinosaurs, I then coloured each big with a matching baby. The colours I went for were red, green, blue, orange, white, black, purple, pink and yellow.
To make your pictures last longer I advise laminating them if possible.
We then played ‘Where’s Daddy?’ obviously the title can be changed to suit your child’s situation. J who was two at the time then helped all the baby dinosaurs find the matching colour big dinosaur ‘Daddy’ and we named all the babies by their colour. When we started we just played on the floor but as we went on I started hiding the ‘Daddies’ around the house to make the game more fun.
I loved this activity, J was learning and having fun because something he loved was incorporated into his learning. He would get so excited to get them out, he loved them so much that once he had learnt his colours and no longer needed the activity he kept the dinosaurs to play with. You can edit this to your child’s loves, fairies, trucks, flowers, dogs etc.
MAKE LEARNING FUN!!

The heat is on!
Everyone is hot in the UK right now and one thing all the parents on the yard are wondering is...
What can we do to keep the kids cool?
We all know how agitated the little ones get when they are hot. Well I have an activity that me and the little ones LOVE in this weather. All you need is a big bowl plastic I find is best. Some animal toys (dinosaurs are our chosen) and water. Throw the toys in the bowl, fill with water and freeze in the freezer. It’s gonna take a good 24 hours so prep is key. Then get out some kids tool toys or if you don’t have any then kitchen utensils such as spoons, spatula etc, maybe even warm water and a calpol syringe. Pop the ice from the bowl and you have yourself hours of fun with your kids. Working to cup away the ice for their animals.
