It has been wonderful welcoming our new and returning students back to their studies and into our Business School.

Throughout the week, students have taken part in a wide range of activities designed to help them connect, build confidence and prepare for the year ahead.

A Business Challenge set by Olivia Thackstone, Visitor Economy and Events Manager at Stoke-on-Trent City Council
An inspiring alumni talk from Channel Merritt
Academic Skills sessions to support students with their studies
Careers activities exploring future opportunities and employability
Video and photography content challenges
Wellbeing time through crafts, colouring and creative activities

We finished the week with our Fun Getting to Know You Day, giving students the opportunity to meet each other, relax and enjoy spending time together before teaching begins.

A huge good luck to all our students for the year ahead. We are looking forward to seeing you in class, watching you develop throughout your studies and, of course, seeing you enjoying our Business School space!

We are incredibly proud of Ella, Mia, Harvey and Fin, who successfully secured places on the prestigious Yummy Jobs Disney International Program and have spent the summer working in the USA.

Since early June, they have been gaining valuable international hospitality experience, developing their cultural awareness, building professional skills and creating lifelong memories while working as part of the Disney experience.

As they prepare to complete their final shifts and return home, we want to congratulate them on this fantastic achievement. Taking part in an international work placement of this kind is an incredible opportunity to develop confidence, independence and employability skills that will support them throughout their future careers in the hospitality and tourism industry.

Congratulations on your recent graduation.
Safe travels home from the USA.

Following Amanda Thompson OBE’s visit to campus last month for our IAAPA talk, she kindly invited our students to be among the first riders of this exciting new attraction. An amazing 54 students took up the opportunity to experience the day as VIP guests.

The experience included:

Welcome food and drinks
Meet and greets with industry leaders
A welcome talk from Amanda Thompson OBE
Q&A sessions
Student interviews and social media content
First-rider experiences on Aviktas

Students also had the opportunity to meet Sacha Czibulka, Executive Vice President of Intamin, and Peter van der Schans, Vice President and Executive Director of IAAPA Europe, Middle East and Africa.

The day gave students a fantastic insight into the visitor attraction, tourism, events and leisure industries, while also creating unforgettable memories at one of the UK’s most iconic resorts.

A huge thank you to Amanda Thompson OBE, Pleasure Beach Resort, Intamin and IAAPA for creating such an inspiring experience for our students.

We are inviting local visitor economy businesses and SME leaders across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent to contribute to an important tourism policy research project at the University.

On Thursday 4th June (09:00–13:00), we will be hosting a focused roundtable discussion at the Catalyst Building, Leek Road Campus, Stoke-on-Trent, exploring what sustainable tourism really looks like in practice for our region.

The session will bring together industry voices to discuss:
• The real challenges facing tourism and hospitality businesses
• Workforce and skills pressures
• Regeneration and growth ambitions
• Opportunities for stronger collaboration across the sector

The aim is to develop a policy paper that reflects the lived realities of businesses and provides clear, practical recommendations to help inform future government decision-making.

This is a small, professionally focused and fully voluntary session. All contributions will be anonymised in line with University research ethics and GDPR requirements. Refreshments will be provided.

If you would like to take part, we’d love to have your voice in the conversation.
