🪲 BUG CLUB — WEEK 4: CLEAN-UP CREW! 🌿
This week at Bug Club, we're meeting some of nature's most important recyclers! 🌍
We'll discover how minibeasts help break down dead material, recycle nutrients and keep our environment healthy.
Our live encounters will include:
💩 Dung beetles — nature's poo recyclers!
🪱 Worms — helping to break down organic matter and improve soil.
🌿 Giant millipedes — munching on dead leaves and plant material
🦐 Dairy cow isopods — recycling nutrients by feeding on decaying material.
We'll discover that even the smallest creatures have BIG jobs to do! 🔍
🏡 Bug Club Challenge
Can you spot any members of nature's clean-up crew in your garden?
Ask your child:
🍂 Which minibeasts help recycle dead leaves?
🌱 Why are worms important for healthy soil?
💩 What do dung beetles do with poo?

🌼💛 Hello Yellow Day - Friday 9th October 💛🌼

At The Valley, we are proud to be supporting Hello Yellow Day to raise awareness of the importance of children's mental health.

On Friday 9th October, children are invited to come to school wearing something yellow alongside their non-uniform. Whether it's a yellow T-shirt, jumper, socks, hair accessory, or ribbon, we'd love to see our school brightened by a splash of yellow!

Hello Yellow Day is a chance to show young people that they are not alone and that talking about mental health is important. Together, we can help create a community where everyone feels supported, valued and able to thrive.

🪲👶 BUG CLUB — WEEK 3: BABY BUGS! 👶🪲
On Friday, we discovered how minibeasts grow and found out that not all babies look like their parents!
🥚 We started with an exciting “Poo or Eggs?!” hunt, searching for tiny stick insect eggs hidden in the substrate.
🦗 We met stick insect nymphs and discovered how they grow by shedding their skin (moulting).
🪲 We then followed the amazing life cycle of a darkling beetle — from egg → larva (mealworm) → pupa → adult beetle.
🐛 We also met Morio worms and sun beetle grubs and discovered that these wriggly creatures are actually baby beetles!
We compared the two different ways minibeasts grow: complete and incomplete metamorphosis.

🐛 BUG CLUB - WEEK 1: COPY CATS!

What a fantastic first Bug Club session 🐛.
On Friday, we discovered that some minibeasts are a master of disguise. The children met some incredible live creatures and investigated how their appearance can help them survive.
🍃McLeay’s Stick Insect - a spectacular insect with amazing leaf-like body parts.
🍂 Dead Leaf Mantis - so well camouflaged amongst dead leaves that it can be incredibly difficult to spot!
🪴 Rainforest Mantis - with its beautiful leaf-like appearance, helping it blend into its surroundings.
🪲 Pachnoda Sun Beetle - with its striking black and yellow colouring, giving it a rather bee-like appearance.
🍃 Giant Hooded Katydid - another amazing master of disguise, with a body that helps it blend into vegetation.
We talked about camouflage and mimicry and how looking like something else- or blending into your surroundings - can give an animal a better chance of surviving.
And, of course, the children got to meet our amazing minibeasts up close! 👀
Ask your child:
“Which minibeast was the best copy cat and what was it pretending to be?”
Don’t worry if they can’t remember all the names - see if they can remember what one of our minibeasts was copying or hiding as! 🙂

A huge well done to our four Reception children! ⭐

Johanna and Ethan Visit The Valley Primary!

They shared their experiences of secondary school life, and gave a brilliant insight into what it's like to be part of the TCA community. 🏫💬
