The Whitfield Valley Centre is owned and run by the award winning charity Chell Area Family Action Group (CAFAG) the charity is a none profit-making organisation whose objectives are to improve the health and wellbeing of the local community. The charity is managed by a Board of Trustees’ currently comprises six individuals with a diverse range of skills and backgrounds. All our board members live in the local community and as such have great empathy and loyalty for both the area and organisation. CAFAG was formed in 1995 with the aim of strengthening family life in the Parish of Chell (Fegg Hayes, Chell and Chell Heath). Way back in the mid 1990’s the area was named in a Church of England report as “the sickest area of a sick city”. A group of local residents decided that local people deserved better and in 1995 with the help of the Church formed CAFAG a local charity; they have been working ever since to change this perception of the area and provide a better life and opportunities for local residents by promoting cohesion and improving the lives and welfare of the local Community. In 2001 CAFAG opened its flagship project, a centre for the local community. Transforming the then dilapidated Fegg Hayes Clinic into the award winning Whitfield Valley Centre was a big undertaking for a small local charity, but with true grit and determination, and considerable help from many quarters, it succeeded. Totally supported by contributions from the charity sector and the generosity of local businesses and entrepreneurs it is now arguably the most successful centre of its kind in the city. In 2011, ten years after opening its doors and, in honour of its valiant work in the community, CAFAG’s Whitfield Valley Centre was awarded The Sentinel/Britannia ‘our Heroes’ Community Group of the Year. Honouring the commitment the charity has to support family life in the local community, when in late 2013 an opportunity arose for us to open our own nursery we grasped the prospect with both hands; already successful at running our own crèche this was a natural progression. Our aim is to offer high quality, well supported care and education to local two and three year olds who qualify for free places. We hope to work in close partnership with parents and support them with their role of bringing up their families and in addition, if they would like to be involved, to offer activity and support through the opportunity to access the facilities in the rest of the centre. We believe that communication is a key component in ensuring that our vision statement is implemented by practitioners, for and with the children and parents/carers. The relationship with parents is important to us. We believe that the relationship between nursery and home facilitates children’s learning further and enables us to improve our care. We strive to ensure that all children have a positive learning experience during their stay with us and an experience that will encourage them to achieve all of their future aspirations.
