💧 Join the refill revolution 💧
Today is World Refill Day – a global campaign to prevent plastic pollution and help people live with less waste. Choose to refuse single-use plastic and refill and reuse instead.

Why? We create more than 300 million tonnes of plastic every year. Half of this is single use. Globally, less than 2% of packaging is reusable. And less than 10% of the plastic we use has ever been recycled.

What can you do on campus?
The Students’ Union College Road Shop has a reuse and refill section. Take your own container (or use one of the recycled containers available) and fill it up with whatever you need – Find your nearest hydration station on campus using our sustainability map here: https://www.staffs.ac.uk/about/sustainability/sustainable-practice

✨EID ✨
🌙 Eid-Ul-Fitr or shortly known as Eid is a festival that Muslims celebrate, which signifies the completion of the month of Ramadan, which is the fasting from dawn to dusk. Eid is declared when the crescent is sighted the night before, which then indicates that it is Eid Tomorrow and that the fasting now ends. Eid does not fall on a particular date or month, it keeps on changing and depends on the moon. Eid brings the start of the shawwal month in the Islamic Calendar.

🌙 On this day, Muslims all around the world celebrate extravagantly, firstly by freshening up and everyone wears new clothes and gets dressed up, the ladies even apply Mehendhi also known as Henna on their hands and adorn themselves followed by attending the Eid morning prayer, after which, they meet and greet their family, friends and relatives with ‘Eid Mubarak’, which translates to ‘Wishes on the occasion of Eid’. Which is then followed by delicious dishes and special sweets like Baklavas and Wattalapam. A special lunch is cooked, such as a mouth-watering biryani, which then everyone gathers up to celebrate and enjoy. We also distribute them to the others in the neighborhood including those of other cultures and religions and celebrate in harmony.

🌙 Furthermore, on the day of Eid, there is a long followed custom/tradition where, the elders of the household offer money or a gift per say which is termed as ‘Eidi’ to their children and others who visit. The festival of Eid, brings together family and friends to celebrate together and creates a blissful and cheerful atmosphere.

🌙 However, due to the COVID-19 Pandemic this year, most of the celebrations were within the household and immediate neighbors while following COVID-19 Safety Protocols, thus using modern technology to wish friends and relatives using video calls.

April New Year is celebrated by Tamils and Sinhalese in Sri Lanka. It is a very special festival for them among other festivals. This article talks about how Tamils celebrate their April new year.

April New Year is the first day of the year on the Tamil calendar. There are several references in Tamil literature to April new year. The Tolkaapiyam (old Tamil literature book) divides the year into six seasons, where April marks the start of the summer, for example. Every year has a unique name in the Tamil calendar and “Subakiruthu” is the name for the 2022 year. April New year generally falls on the 14th of April in the Georgian calendar.

Tamil people strictly follow traditional customs and rituals on this day. Family members clean and wash the entire home and decorate their house entrance with “kolam” (made of colored rice). They take a traditional ceremonial bath called Maruthu neer (Herbal water). It is made of special ingredients including herbal leaves, flowers, and saffron, etc. People buy herbal water from Kovils. They buy new clothes based on new year special colors according to each year and visit Kovils at “punniya neram” (good time) for poojai. In addition, they prepare vegetarian dishes and traditional Tamil sweets such as Sippi, Murukku, and Ariyatharam, etc. People do visit their relatives’ homes and exchange sweets and love among them. Villagers conduct traditional games such as cart races and coconut wars in their villages. Kids receive money from elders as Kai vishesham (pocket money) and it is the first financial transaction in the new year.

Overall, it is the festival for family visits and family unity
