Hold-Out Kicks vs. Throwing Your Leg
Throwing your leg up using momentum might look fast, but it ruins your balance, leaves you vulnerable if you miss, and cheats your muscles out of real development.
If you want ironclad stability and true striking power, switch to hold-out kicks.
Why to Avoid Throwing Your Leg
Zero Control: Momentum carries you through, meaning you cannot stop or redirect mid-strike.
Compromised Balance: You have to lean your upper body away to compensate, leaving you off-balance.
Superficial Strength: Swinging relies on loose momentum rather than deep muscular contraction.
The Benefits of the Hold-Out
Total Engagement: Pausing at full extension forces your core and standing leg stabilizers to lock in, building exceptional balance.
Strength Under Tension: Isometrically holding the position forces your quads, glutes, and hip flexors to work harder.
Absolute Ownership: If you can hold a kick out cleanly, you control the technique.
How to Drill It
The Iso-Hold: Extend your kick to your target height and freeze it for 3 to 5 seconds before retracting. Keep your posture upright and hands up.
Slow-Mo Reps: Perform your kicks in extreme slow motion through every phase—chamber, extension, hold, and retraction.
Quality reps beat sloppy volume every time. Slow it down and build strength where it counts.

Proud Sensei and proud uncle moment today! 🥋❤️
I had the absolute honor of grading my niece today as she successfully earned her 9th Kyu in Kahen-sei freestyle kickboxing. Watching her step onto the mat, focus, and put all her hard work into action is an incredible feeling.
Seeing family grow and excel in the martial arts is something special. Huge congratulations to her on taking this next big step—the journey is just beginning! 👊💥
