Experience a unique minibus tour around the operational area and view platforms of Holcim's Torr Works quarry near Frome. This tour will be escorted by SESC and Holcim staff. Personal safety wear will be provided, but you must wear walking boots/wellies, and no shorts.
Suitable for all aged 12+ . Limited numbers to 14 max seats. £15 pp. Meet at the Somerset Earth Science Centre.

Making the most of the dry weather to work with a very focused and resilient group of Year 12 biologists from Writhlington School while they collect sampling data at Halecombe Quarry.

With warmer weather on the way, many people will be heading outdoors to enjoy the sunshine, but please remember quarries are not safe places to swim or explore.

Even if the water looks calm and inviting, quarry water can be extremely dangerous:

❄️ Ice-cold temperatures that can cause shock, cramp, or drowning
🕳️ Hidden drop-offs and submerged hazards beneath the surface
🚫 Steep, unstable edges and risk of falling rocks

Stay safe by choosing supervised environments such as lifeguarded pools or designated open-water venues.

We've had a wonderful day with the children from Yeo Moor Primary School, Clevedon. They particularly enjoyed their tour of Moons Hill Quarry, learning about the ancient volcanic rock and how it is processed and used to surface their local roads in North Somerset. with John Wainwright & Co., North Somerset Council.
