⛈ There has been a Yellow Thunderstorm Alert issued by the MET Office for the North East between 19:00 (UTC+1) on Wednesday 19 August 2026 and 10:00 (UTC+1) on Thursday 20 August 2026.

Thunderstorms are most common during summer months and are most likely to produce torrential downpours of rain, which can lead to flooding.

They increase the risk of disruption to transport networks, power cuts, and damage property.

See the following for advice on travelling in storms, rain and strong winds and staying safe in heavy rain.

If you experience a power cut, you should contact the electricity Distribution Network Operator (DNO) that covers your area.

Heavy showers and thunderstorms likely to lead to some travel disruption and flash flooding.

What to expect:
• There is a good chance driving conditions will be affected by spray, standing water and/or hail, leading to longer journey times by car and bus
• Some flooding of a few homes and businesses likely, leading to some damage to buildings or structures
• Probably some damage to a few buildings and structures from lightning strikes
• Delays to train services are possible
• Some short-term loss of power and other services is likely

There has been a Yellow Heat-Health Alert issued by the Met Office for the North East - in effect between 11 August 2026 at 9am and 14 August 2026 at 9pm.

Hot weather causes increased risk to the health of vulnerable individuals.

Please see the tips below for keeping yourself and those you care for safe during hot weather:
• drink more cold drinks, especially if you're active or exercising
• wear light-coloured, loose clothing
• wear protective clothing such as hats and sunglasses
• use suncream with at least SPF 30 and 4 star UVA protection
• avoid the sun between 11am and 3pm
• avoid excess alcohol
• avoid extreme exercise
• if you're inside on a very hot day, close curtains, close windows if it's hotter outside than in your home and turn off electrical equipment and lights that get hot. This will also prevent dehydration and help your body keep itself cool.
• never leave anyone in a closed, parked vehicle, especially infants, young children, older people or animals
• Keep babies under six months out of direct sunlight, avoid covering prams or pushchairs with blankets, and ensure good airflow to prevent overheating.
• Just because the weather is warm, it doesn’t mean the water will be. If you think you are experiencing cold water shock, Float To Live. If you see someone in trouble, phone 999, encourage them to float, and throw them something that will help them stay afloat. For more water safety advice, visit the RoSPA website

There’s a high risk of heat exhaustion or heatstroke during periods of hot weather. Heat exhaustion occurs when our body is unable to cool itself down. Look out for signs of:
• a headache
• dizziness and confusion
• loss of appetite and feeling sick
• excessive sweating and pale, clammy skin
• cramps in the arms, legs and stomach
• fast breathing or pulse
• a high temperature of 38oC or above
• being very thirst

The exceptional contributions of people supporting those living with dementia were celebrated at the Dementia Care Awards on Wednesday (24 June), where winners were presented with their awards by broadcaster and journalist, Angela Rippon CBE.

Organised by Care Talk, the national awards recognise outstanding practice across the sector and celebrate a commitment to delivering high-quality, person-centred care.

Three of the winners are from the Borough, including the Council’s Community Link Worker, Lesley Tart (pictured centre), whose dedication is making a real difference to people’s lives.

💜 Dementia Friendly Community Project Award – Lesley Tart

Lesley has made an incredible contribution to building a more dementia-friendly Stockton-on-Tees. Through her passion and dedication, she has created inclusive spaces where people living with dementia feel valued, supported, and confident. Lesley works closely with local partners to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and ensure communities are welcoming to all. Her compassionate, person-centred approach continues to make a lasting difference to individuals and families across the Borough.

💜 Dementia Friendly Business Award – Stockton Globe

The Globe has shown how arts and culture can be inclusive. Through dementia-friendly events such as Singalong Songbook sessions, alongside thoughtful venue adaptations and well-trained staff, The Globe provides a welcoming and supportive environment. Their work helps people living with dementia and their carers enjoy shared experiences, boosting confidence, connection, and wellbeing.

💜 Dementia Friendly Business Award – HM Prison and Probation Service Holme House

HMP Holme House has demonstrated a remarkable commitment to dementia awareness within a secure environment. By delivering training to staff and prisoners, improving environments, and embedding person-centred practice, the prison is creating a more supportive and understanding community. Their ongoing partnership work ensures dementia awareness remains a key priority and sets a powerful example of inclusive practice.

The Herbert Protocol is a useful tool that can help police quickly locate a vulnerable person if they go missing, particularly those living with dementia or other conditions that may cause them to become lost or confused.

We are also pleased to welcome OneCall, who will be on hand to talk about and demonstrate a range of Telecare equipment designed to support people to live safely and independently at home.
