MYTH: A SCITT is just a full time teaching job in school and your QTS depends on the school's feedback.

FACT: At Stockton SCITT you will start in centre based training and won't go to your placement school until mid-late September. Initially, you will be observing until you gradually take on teaching hours.

Throughout the course, you will have a dedicated mentor in school who helps track your progress, but SCITT also has a dedicated team to support you and monitor your progress. This includes our internal team, a subject knowledge tutor, and a visiting tutor (who sees you in school).

Through the year, you have 4 days in school and one training day in centre. Sometimes, there is a short gap in centre for training or to observe other types of provision (e.g. SEND).

This balance of school/centre time helps you form relationships with school staff, belong as part of the school team and make sense of your theory based training in context.

MYTH: I'm more likely to get a job if I train through a trust...

FACT: Teacher training is about preparing you for a career, not just your first job.

As a local authority SCITT, we have strong partnerships with schools across the North East and have been training teachers for almost 25 years. In fact, some of the headteachers we work with today once trained with us!

Our trainees benefit from experiencing different schools, settings and approaches through placements, visits and training. This helps them see that there isn’t just one way to teach well and gives them opportunities to reflect on what works in different contexts.

Many of our former trainees now work in schools across the region, and we love welcoming them back as mentors and trainers as their careers develop.

Your dream job is never guaranteed, wherever you train, but experiencing a range of schools can help you understand what matters to you, build your confidence and prepare you to work in different settings.

MYTH: You can only do a SCITT if you already have school experience.

FACT: At Stockton SCITT we have trainees from a variety of backgrounds. Some are university leavers with little or no school/work experience. Some have worked in schools and are retraining to teach and some come from industry backgrounds. We have everything in between too! For example, parents who are following a new path after many years of childcaring responsibilities; trainees who have taught abroad and are returning to the UK and international trainees who are creating a new career path in the UK.

We design our course keeping in mind that trainees have different starting points and need different levels of support and guidance to gain QTS with PGCE.

MYTH: SCITTs are a less academic route to teaching than a University PGCE...

FACT: At Stockton SCITT you will work towards a PGCE through our partner Sheffield Hallam University. Their tutors come to us to deliver this part of the programme. Sheffield Hallam is a leading hub for teacher education and research; they work with policymakers and practitioners to influence teaching and learning nationwide.

Stockton SCITT also have their own research output and are dedicated to making a difference to initial teacher education. We have recently published our own original research in the Chartered College of Teaching Impact Journal ('Supporting trainee teacher resilience through mentoring') and have contributed to a recent book (Historical Consciousness within Teacher Education by Nick Mead) released in June 2026.

At Stockton SCITT, the practical elements of teaching are woven through with the academic theory to help trainees make sense of what they have learned in context.
