I specialise in the restoration and repair of vintage valve radios from 1930 to the early 1960's. I didn't think that one out in the beginning.

Over the past couple of years this work has evolved into conversions to internet/DAB/FM and Bluetooth as AM broadcasts have declined. This page is about my work repairing, restoring and, when wanted, converting old valve wireless sets to receive modern DAB, FM broadcasts and even Internet Streaming. I established Dab Hand Radio as a one man 'hobby business' in 2010 when I retired due to ill healt

Finished the Ekco and here it is listening to BBC6Music on DAB through it's original speaker.

Polished up well and done new grille cloth.

The dangerous Ekco is being DAB'ed and it's original lethalities isolated. I can use the original speaker in the conversion so not all will be lost... Case has scrubbed up nicely with a combination of special wood toned felt tip pens and stain. New grille cloth ordered...

A pity in some ways that the original AM radio wasn't a cost effective restoration but this is the situation when I work on customer's radios. If I had infinite time it could have been revived but.... Maybe one day?

There will be a few older listeners still using Long Wave in the Yorkshire Dales.

The BBC has announced that its Long Wave service on 198kHz, currently transmitting BBC Radio 4, will close on 27 June 2026 at 1am BST.

The Long Wave transmitters at Droitwich in Worcestershire, Westerglen near Stirling, and Burghead overlooking the Moray Firth, will be closed that day.

The company that owns and operates the LW broadcast equipment has confirmed that the system is reaching the end of its life. As LW is an older broadcasting technology, recent years have seen a decline in listener numbers, with the majority now opting for FM and DAB digital platforms.

Given these factors, investing in upgrading the LW equipment is not considered a cost-effective solution for licence fee-funded services.
