A little video.... GEC with a scratchy volume pot. Clean or replace?
I drilled a tiny hole and gave it a go with Deoxit... Temporarily cured but invariably 24hrs later the crackles will be back?? Let's see...
The Vintage Radio Repair Shop
I specialise in the restoration and repair of vintage valve radios from 1930 to the early 1960's. I didn't think that one out in the beginning.
Over the past couple of years this work has evolved into conversions to internet/DAB/FM and Bluetooth as AM broadcasts have declined. This page is about my work repairing, restoring and, when wanted, converting old valve wireless sets to receive modern DAB, FM broadcasts and even Internet Streaming. I established Dab Hand Radio as a one man 'hobby business' in 2010 when I retired due to ill healt

Thank you for your patience Steve! He's been waiting a long time.
Unfortunately there is some courier damage to repair before I start on the electrical side.

Finished the PYE P75 but christened it 'Trigger's Broom' as I had to replace about a quarter of the original insides, including the speaker, due to the damage. But it works and now has added DAB FM and Bluetooth..

Cracking on with a GEC for a repair and servicing. Came in with a very worn cloth mains lead sporting a two pin plug circa 1940's...And lots of still active wildlife!
Once the radio was up and running (usual suspect capacitors and perished wiring) time to add on a digital DAB FM and Bluetooth unit to the rear panel.
This one is destined to leave our shores and take up residence in Australia! Extra blanket to keep it safe on its long journey ...... Good job the wildlife was eliminated or it might haves been quarantined, 😜😜
The loudspeaker needed the wallpaper paste and paper mache treatment but currently sounds pretty good!

Don't do too many of these but here's my latest total conversion from AM to digital... Using an old Bush DAC90A chassis and case.
And for the purists out there I generally repair/restore a vintage radio and add the digital circuits which are switched 'in' leaving the work reversible, so that the original radio stays , well, original if needed to be put back in the past....
This modernisation uses the k***s and original speaker. The volume control works as on the old AM set, as does the tuning, albeit using a 'shuttle jog' digital encoder. The waveband switch now just operates the dial lights.
It has FM and Bluetooth as well plus remote control, sleep, EQ and alarms and loads of other stuff.
