Seashell

Seashell Seashell is a charity transforming the lives of disabled children and young adults with the most complex needs.

Seashell is dedicated to providing a creative, happy and secure environment for children and young people with complex learning disabilities and additional communication needs. Seashell offers a holistic approach with Seashell Royal School Manchester, Seashell Royal College Manchester, our 17 home-from-home care houses and our sports, health and wellbeing offer. Seashell focuses on the extended family that cares for each one of our students and residents and about the difference that can be made to all those connected lives. We strive to include the whole family and the wider community in the life experience of our children and young people.

Assistive Technology can be life-changing for young people with complex needs.

Our Assistive Technologists use a range of devices to support students to communicate, develop new skills and prepare them for adulthood. Today we want to show you our amazing Immersive Space!

Students can immerse themselves in interactive play by using the projector, connecting their tablets to the screen, and using the floor projection system.

“Games like these promote active choice-making with activities the student enjoys, such as singing and spelling,” said Pete, Assistive Technologist HLTA.

“They also support students to engage independently, hold attention and share turn-taking with peers.”

One student enjoyed singing his favourite song, Old McDonald, while sharing turns with Pete to choose each animal at the farm. Ee-i-ee-i-oh!

“Eight incredible days, six days climbing and nearly two days descending … we pushed ourselves to the limit and made memories we’ll never forget!”

Supporters Charlotte and Jo successfully summited Mount Kilimanjaro last month in aid of Seashell, raising an amazing £2,900. We invited them both to our site last week to see first-hand the work their fundraising will support.

“What started as our bucket-list adventure quickly became an opportunity to give something back to an amazing charity,” they said

“We were fully welcomed and saw the inspiring staff and students engaging in some incredible activities on our return.

“Completing this challenge has inspired us to raise even more, so we’re already considering our next adventure!”

Our Life Skills Rooms support students to learn the basics of cooking and food hygiene, fostering independence and skills for life.

Come with us to see one of the sessions in action, where students made tasty iced cookies and heartwarming vegetable soup by following a step-by-step visual recipe.

Once the cookies were ready, students held a community café in the Heart Space where friends were invited to try them out and enjoy some hot and cold drinks.

Jess, Cooking and Life Skills Teaching Assistant, said: "The community café provides a real-life purpose to learning, where students can serve others, practise communication skills, and experience the pride of sharing something they have created with peers!"

Take note: we've bought 16 new instruments, including keyboards, guitars, ukuleles, steel drums and tambourines for young people to use!

The instruments were bought thanks to a £1,500 donation from Tesco Stronger Starts, which was awarded to Seashell's CADS programme after customers voted for us with their blue tokens.

"Music can be a powerful tool for emotional regulation, and playing instruments can support communication, social interaction and developing motor skills," said Mariyah, CADS Development Officer.

This year's Seashell Golf Day was certainly above par!

We welcomed 20 teams to Mottram Hall for a day of tee-rific swings, various challenges on the course and an evening ceremony to celebrate the success of our players.

This year we were delighted to have comedian Colin Manford keeping us laughing through the dinner, and we raised an absolutely incredible £18,000!

Thank you to Wilkinson Financial Management for sponsoring this event for the third year running - we're so grateful for the support for yet another incredible golf day. Until next year!

Would you know how to respond to emergency anaphylaxis?

For , we're sharing some important information to support allergy awareness, prevention and emergency response.

We've recently implemented some changes in line with Benedict's Law, which requires a standalone campus allergy policy, allergy awareness training for all staff, accessible Adrenaline Auto Injectors, and clear plans to support individuals with allergies.

By increasing awareness and confidence in responding to an allergy emergency, we can create a safer environment for everyone.

Last Friday was National Teaching Assistants' Day!

To celebrate, our school and college teams had a special assembly at the end of the day to thank our staff for the incredible impact they make day in, day out.

College Co-Principals Katherine and Niall laid out a fabulous spread of cakes, doughnuts and cookies, before doing a special prize draw where four lucky winners won a £15 Love2Shop voucher!

School social committee members Maggie and Joe made a presentation to thank each class, where members of staff came to the front for a special pen and some sweet treats.

"Our students are incredibly lucky to have such dedicated, compassionate and supportive teaching assistants alongside them, and we as staff are equally lucky to work alongside such a wonderful team," said Maggie.

We were delighted to host the Blossom Project at Seashell last week, funded by Quarry Bank and delivered by professionals from Venture Arts and Rooted Soul Yoga .

Throughout the day we had poetry, art and yoga sessions for our Royal College Manchester students to practise their skills and try something new.

"Each session was inclusive, thoughtfully planned, and well structured," said Ruth, Advanced Practitioner. "It was wonderful to see students and staff working collaboratively and engaging so positively together."

Thank you to everyone involved in organising and delivering this project. We had a fantastic time participating!

Did you catch us on BBC Countryfile yesterday?

We were thrilled to be featured as part of BBC Children in Need, who part-fund our holiday club CADS (Children's Activities and Disabled Sports).

Grace bonded with Activity Instructor Clair when she first started swimming lessons at Seashell nine years ago. Since then, Grace started attending CADS where she is supported to learn new skills and make friends.
