This is my baby’s story.

We are so incredibly proud of how brave he is, not only undergoing 3 operations by the age of 4, but in happily talking openly to his friends (or anyone who asked) about his hands and his journey.

He is delighted that Mini First Aid are sharing his story in the hope that any other families of babies born with syndactyly may draw some comfort from it.

He had his final post-op appointment last week and his consultant is very happy with how his hands are healing. He will have follow up appointments every 2 years until he is 16 to monitor the scarring as he grows. But right now, he’s just enjoying his first days in school and looking forward to being able to wear gloves this winter. What a legend 💚

⚠️ Save this post as a reminder that the main sign that your baby or child is choking rather than gagging is SILENCE.

If your child is gagging, you will usually hear them trying to clear their throat or the back of their mouth.

If your child is choking, there is a blockage in their airway, and they cannot make any noise.

Babies and toddlers under 12 months old are not able to regulate their temperature very well, this function develops as they grow. All babies/toddlers are different and will begin to regulate their body temperatures at different stages so you will figure out what is right for your child.

Remember to touch the back of their neck with the back of your hand to assess body temp rather than checking their hands or feet. The neck should feel warm. If the baby feels hot or his/her skin is damp from sweating, remove some of the bedding. A normal temperature in babies and children is about 36.4C (NHS)

Use layers of clothing with a sleeping bag or lightweight blanket, that can be easily removed or added, while you try to find the right combination. If using a blanket or sheet, follow The Lullaby Trust guidance on placing baby on their back with their feet at the end of their cot or Moses basket, so they can’t wriggle down under their bedding, and ensure the blanket/sheet is tucked in firmly and not above shoulder height.

For older children, the guidance about ideal room temperature is largely the same.

Often, families only hear about group B Strep AFTER their baby is seriously ill with it. That’s what Group B Strep Awareness month is all about - ensuring that parents-to-be know the signs and symptoms.

Group B Strep is a relatively common bacterial infection, but it can cause problems if it spreads from a pregnant mother to the baby.

Although testing is not routinely offered on the NHS, tests are available to purchase privately - you can find more information on this on the Group B Strep Support website.

Cuts and grazes are an inevitable part of your child becoming independent and exploring their surroundings.
