Employers have a responsibility to ensure that all employees are adequately informed about the first aid arrangements in the workplace.

This applies to everyone — including staff who travel frequently, rarely visit your main site and casual or occasional workers.

HSE guidance notes that clear first aid information signs can be an effective way to communicate these arrangements.

To reinforce this, you could also make the information available:

• during staff inductions, so new employees understand the arrangements from day one

• on your company intranet, ensuring remote or mobile workers have equitable access

• through regular updates in bulletins, internal communications, or email notices

‼️ It’s also important to consider colleagues who may need this information provided in alternative formats — for example, employees with hearing or visual impairments.

🙂 Feedback like this keeps us motivated.

Here’s a recent Trustpilot review from a learner in a Scottish business — and it’s a great reminder of why we’re committed to delivering practical, confidence‑building first aid training every single time.

Slips, trips, and falls might seem minor — but the impact is anything but.

In workplaces across the UK, they remain the number one cause of injury.

They account for around 40% of all major incidents reported each year, costing employers over £500 million annually in lost productivity, injury claims, staff absence, and more.

And it’s not just employees at risk — slips and trips are also the most common injury affecting members of the public who visit workplaces.

These incidents are often preventable. Simple steps like good housekeeping, clear walkways, appropriate footwear, and proactive staff training can dramatically reduce risk.

For businesses, prevention isn’t just compliance — it’s good operational sense.

As someone who trains teams daily to be more confident, competent, and safety‑aware, I see the difference that practical skills and a strong safety culture can make.

Let’s make workplaces safer, together.

🙂 Moments like this make the long days worth it.

We received this Trustpilot review from a student a couple of weeks ago, and it really hit home.

Our goal has always been to deliver first aid training that feels real, relevant and genuinely confidence‑building.

Hearing that it makes a difference in workplaces across Scotland is exactly why Forth Training exists.

Thanks to everyone who chooses us for their staff development — it’s a responsibility that we take very seriously.

Every new year brings new — and often exciting — challenges for businesses across Scotland.

Many are expanding into additional premises, employing more staff, or introducing new products and services for the first time.

That makes this the perfect moment to review your first aid provision.

HSE guidance recommends that employers should periodically review their first aid needs and arrangements, especially following any operating changes.

Although not an exhaustive list (and you must consider your own specific circumstances), examples of operating changes could include things like:

• staff promotions that result in trained personnel no longer being regularly on‑site

• changes to working patterns, such as the introduction of night‑shift work

• new products or equipment that introduce additional risks

So — take time to ensure your needs assessment is up to date and reflects your business’s current position.

It’s important for compliance, but more importantly, it helps ensure you’re protecting your staff.

One thing we’re consistently asked by employers is:

“What makes high‑quality first aid training actually high‑quality?”

For me, it comes down to four key things things:

1. Realistic scenarios (without overwhelming people) - and making it applicable to their working environment

2. Clear, practical explanation of concepts - and letting them know the ‘why’

3. Building confidence and understanding, not fear

4. Ensuring, above all, that the training is based on accredited content, which aligns with the latest available evidence-based practice

The goal isn’t memorising — it’s understanding.

The role isn’t to turn staff into clinicians — it’s to empower them.

Every time a business chooses Forth Training, that’s the standard we aim to deliver.

🙂 This is a fantastic reminder of why we do what we do.

Last week, a learner from a Scottish business left this review on Trustpilot — and feedback like this genuinely means a lot.

We work very hard to make sure every course is practical, engaging and built around real‑world confidence.

Huge thanks to every organisation that trusts me with their teams’ training. And an even bigger thank you to the learners who show up keen to develop the skills that could one day save a life!

Many Scottish SMEs I speak to would love the opportunity to have a defibrillator.

Truth is - although many would love one, and can clearly see the obvious benefits - the initial cost outlay and on-going maintenance is prohibitive.

On top of the actual defibrillator, for those wanting it mounted outside there can also be additional costs for a cabinet, electrical works (to heat the cabinet if necessary) and more…

However, it would appear there is now a solution:

NOTE: I’m not affiliated in any way, with any of these companies - I’m simply highlighting their offering in the hope that if any SMEs see this, it is helpful!

There are an increasing number of companies now offering ‘rental’ or ‘lease’ options for defibrillators:

Defib Store: https://www.defibstore.co.uk/services-rent-a-defibrillator

Pulse4All: https://go.pulse4all.co.uk/rent-vs-subscribe/

Defib Warehouse: https://defibwarehouse.co.uk/rental-packages/

Rent a Defib: https://www.rentadefib.co.uk

I’m sure there are more - but these are the ones that I was able to find.

This removes the initial outlay, as well as the on-going maintenance (although I’m sure it will vary by provider) and replaces it with a much, much lower monthly cost.

Hopefully this provides smaller and medium sized Scottish businesses with access to a potentially life saving piece of kit, which otherwise may have been out of reach or unachievable.

Let me know in the comments if it’s helpful!

Had a great group this week completing their 3-day First Aid at Work — it’s amazing how confident people feel once a concept ‘clicks’. Confidence is half of first aid. Plus, they had good fun, which is always a bonus!
