This is Volunteers’ Week and we were very pleased to present Niall with a certificate in the woods today. We want to say a huge Thank You to him for coming along to support our staff team and children every week. He is a great asset to CVN and we are grateful for his dedication 🥰

While many of us were looking for ways to stay cool this week, the children discovered that the woodland already has its own natural cooling system.
From splashing in the burn and spotting freshwater scuds to discovering unusual beech galls on leaves, the week was full of curiosity, exploration and unexpected discoveries.

This week on the blog we’ve been reflecting on the importance of play and all of the learning hidden within everyday childhood moments.
From muddy wellies to splashing in the burn, sometimes the simplest moments hold some of the richest learning.

We’re excited to say that we’ve taken another step forward in our journey to becoming registered as a fully outdoor nursery 🎉
While we’re still working towards our long-term move to the woods (and waiting on permissions), we’ve now applied to the Care Inspectorate to operate as a fully outdoor nursery from our Community Centre garden.
This won’t really change anything for the children — we’re already outside for most of our days — but it supports the next stage of our journey and reflects the way we love to learn outdoors
It’s a small detour, but a really positive step forward in the bigger journey
The Care Inspectorate process can take around 3 months, so for now it’s business as usual — just with a bit of exciting progress happening behind the scenes!

We’ve been making the most of a sunny week in the woods with Easter egg hunts, tree planting and even tapping birch trees to watch the sap flow 🌱
A lovely way to finish the term — even if the Easter weekend is bringing storms and snow!

We had a brilliant time in the woods today tapping birch trees
After learning how to spot birch trees by their shiny white bark, we carefully used tools to make a small hole and add a tap. The children remembered how to keep safe by giving each other space while tools were being used.
Then came the best part… watching the sap slowly drip out! We collected it in cups and of course had a little taste – fresh from the tree… and it got a big thumbs up.
A lovely reminder that nature is the best teacher – full of curiosity, wonder and hands-on learning

Well done and big thanks to all of the volunteers who are helping make our woodland such a wonderful place to be.
CVN were proud to be part of this effort and help to plant a few of the 1000 trees 😉

TeamCVN had a wonderful morning out in Gillies Hill Community Woodland, working alongside the amazing volunteers from the Development Trust. Staff and children worked together to plant trees in an area that had recently been cleared.
It’s great to support our children to learn how to care for their environment, be part of their community, and understand how small actions can help things grow.

Last weekend it felt like spring had arrived.
Sunshine, warmth, and that sense winter might finally be over.
This week the weather reminded us it isn’t quite finished yet — wind, rain and lots of mud!
For the children that simply means new things to explore. Mud to squash, shape and transform. It’s amazing how quickly they notice that the same material behaves differently depending on the conditions.
Spring may be on its way… but winter clearly wanted the last word!
🌱 Next time it rains, try catching a raindrop on your tongue and see what it tastes like.

Today is the last day to submit applications to be considered for nursery places starting August 2026.
Applications are accepted all year round, but those received by the end of February are prioritised for initial allocations. Later applications will be offered places subject to availability.
