There is a need for tutors and learners of ESOL to become more aware of meaningful progression routes by building on existing skills, knowledge and experience. As part of my work and for my dissertation, I developed and critically evaluated a resource which was designed for this purpose and could be used as a tool for self-reflection and awareness-raising in a participatory context.

Working with Emergent Language - Pavilion Publishing 11/05/2024

This morning, Richard Chinn gave a talk on supporting teachers in developing their reactive skills and working with emergent language for the SATEFL community. If you missed it, stay tuned, as members will receive a link to the recording. You can of course also read more about emergent language in a communicative approach in Richard's recent book, co-authored with Danny Norrington-Davies: https://pavpub.com/mental.../working-with-emergent-language (and many thanks to Richard for generously sharing a discount code with SATEFL members)!

In the webinar, Richard illustrated examples of a teacher handling and facilitating emergent language with a video from a fantastic new teacher training video series developed by International House โ€“ through active listening and effective board work โ€“ see https://teacherportal.ihlondon.com/

Tasks that he identified for teacher development in this area included:
* Use a Video for awareness raising
* Explore feedback (1. a focus on meaning and 2. language)'
* Look at what language can be worked on
* Identify techniques for recording language on the board
* Consider ways to recycle language.
Many thanks to Richard for this really inspiring and encouraging talk that got us all thinking about empowering learners with their emergent language to express themselves, and how we can support student teachers in doing this!

Registration is open for our next webinar, with Richard Chinn (King's College London), "Supporting teachers in developing their reactive skills in class", Sat 11 May 2024 10โ€“11 AM BST.

Teaching has been described as involving skilled improvisation and as we develop as teachers, we become better at anticipating and reacting to what emerges in class. As a result, reacting to learnersโ€™ emergent needs is a key area of development and even experienced teachers can learn from investigating how they deal with classroom interaction. In this session, we will explore the role of emergent language in interaction and consider ways in which teachers can development of this complex skill.

Richard Chinn is a teacher educator based in London and he works on MA and BA programmes at Kingโ€™s College London. He is also involved in pre-and in-service teacher training courses at International House London. He has taught English and trained teachers in Central and South America, Asia, Africa, and Europe. His professional interests are in emergent language, classroom interaction, language teaching methodology, and teacher development. He is co-author of the book โ€˜Working with Emergent Languageโ€™ published by Pavilion ELT, 2023.
