A quick update for the local community about essential works taking place on the shared driveway/road that runs past the doctor’s surgery and up to Dounans, which also forms part of a core path.
We’ll be resurfacing the driveway and upgrading drainage to help manage natural water run-off.
Scheduled dates: 2–13 February (Monday–Friday, 9am–5pm)
During this period, there may be times when access along this section of the core path is restricted due to construction activity and machinery. Signage will be in place, and we’ll aim to keep disruption to a minimum.
Alternative access: If possible, please avoid this section of the core path during the works. Where you can, consider using:
• The core path that passes St Mary’s Church, through the woods and into FLS land, or
• The staggered barriers on National Cycle Route 7.
If you have any questions or need further information, feel free to get in touch.
Thank you for your patience and understanding while we carry out these important improvements.

Something truly wonderful happened last night in the Scottish Parliament!
MSPs unanimously voted (120–0!) to pass a transformational bill that invests in our young people by guaranteeing every school pupil access to a five-day, four-night stay at an outdoor education centre.
Outdoor educators will proudly work tirelessly alongside teachers, helping to inspire confidence, resilience, and a connection to the natural world — especially for children who have never had this opportunity before.
Many congratulations to Liz Smith CBE MSP and to everyone who played a part in delivering this landmark change.
This is just the beginning — there will be a period of implementation as finer details are developed and guidance is put in place before the intentions of the Act become reality, and the hard work truly begins.

“Time in nature is not leisure time; it's an essential investment in our children’s health (and also, by the way, in our own).” Louv, R. (2005) Last Child in the Woods
Very well done to Crossgates Primary School and Nursery! It has been a very wet couple of days, but the growth and resilience of the young people has been amazing to watch.

🌿 Welcome to Dounans Outdoor Education Centre 🌿
We’re pleased to welcome Primary 7 pupils from Crossgates Primary School and Nursery and Nursery to Dounans this week.
The Outdoor Education Bill has moved to Stage 2 in the Scottish Parliament!
This is a key step towards guaranteeing all pupils the chance to experience residential outdoor learning — building confidence, teamwork & a lifelong connection with nature.
Let’s keep the momentum going!
At SOEC, we do more than provide activities.
“We are not just an activity provider — the activities are merely vehicles for learning.” — Jamie Miller, Chief Executive of SOEC
Each experience is carefully designed to foster personal development, teamwork, and resilience, ensuring that the lessons gained extend far beyond the activity itself.
We are proud to be apart of and support the Outdoor Education Bill in Scotland, which recognises the vital role of outdoor learning in shaping confident, capable, and resilient young people in Scotland.

📺 BBC at Dounans! 📺
We were delighted to welcome the BBC to Dounans yesterday as they covered a proposed bill that could guarantee every young person in Scotland a week of residential outdoor education.
For many, experiences like this build confidence, resilience, and memories that last a lifetime.
With the bill now facing financial challenges, we’re proud to show why outdoor learning matters.
