The Association for Black and Minority Ethnic Engineers (AFBE-UK)’s flagship conference taking place on 30 October 2026 at The Vox Conference Centre in Birmingham.

This year’s theme, The Future of Engineering: From Access to Equity, brings together engineers, leaders, innovators and students to explore how we build a more equitable and future‑ready engineering sector.

That's exactly what Carolyn Barbour has achieved.

As Project Engineering Manager at Chivas Brothers, Carolyn recognised an opportunity to transform how engineering projects were prioritised across the business. She developed a structured, data-led framework that ensures investment decisions are based on safety, and quality with a consistent, transparent approach. Now embedded across the organisation, her work is helping ensure engineering resources are focused where they can have the greatest impact.

Carolyn's story shows that great engineering isn't just about designing solutions, it's about creating better ways of working.

Each Professional Engineering Institution (PEI) can nominate one candidate for the Karen Burt Memorial Award, Best Newly Incorporated Engineer (IEng) Award, or Best Newly Registered Engineering Technician (EngTech) Award.
