I walked into the dance class and nobody noticed me.

Not one of them 😂

They were far too busy trying to find negative space.

Their teacher had given them a creative task.

Rather than teaching them a routine to copy, she'd given them a problem to solve and left them to come up with the ideas.

The focus was brilliant.

They were trying things, changing things and getting ridiculously excited every time they found a new way to use the space.

When the class finished, they didn't want to stop. They were convinced there was still more negative space to find 😂

It got me thinking about creativity in children and how it doesn't always look like we expect it to.

You don't have to be the child with all the ideas to be creative.

Half term plans sorted? 👀

If you’ve got a 4 or 5 year old who loves dressing up, singing around the house or pretending to be their favourite character, they might love our Frozen Workshop. ❄️

It’s a chance for them to sing, dance, act and play with other children their own age.
And you get a little bit of half term time to yourself too. 😉

Theatretrain has ruined The Beatles for me 😂

My first large-scale Theatretrain show was The Long and Winding Road, our Beatles show.

For our large-scale shows, Robert (our Musical Director and now my husband) arranges the songs with the original tune and then two different choir parts, red and blue.

When I taught the show, I had to learn and teach the harmony parts rather than the tune.

As a singing teacher, I absolutely loved it.

There's something really interesting about taking songs you know really well and suddenly having to ignore the melody you've sung for years and find a completely different part.

There was just one problem...

Almost 20 years later, I STILL can't listen to the original Beatles tracks without singing Robert's harmony parts.

My brain apparently decided his version was the correct version and there's no going back 😂

Thanks Robert.

Anyone else got a song they can no longer listen to normally?

What happens if you change the speed of a performance?

You can make something faster.

Slow it right down.

Stop completely.

Or have one person moving at a completely different pace to everyone else.

And suddenly, what we’re watching feels completely different.

Time is the second of the five core elements of The Theatretrain Way, and it’s something we play with in singing, dancing and acting every week.

"They haven't really made any friends yet."

It's something parents sometimes say to me a few weeks into a new term.

And I completely understand the worry.

We all want our children to feel like they belong.

But friendships don't always happen overnight.

I've watched so many friendships begin in the smallest ways.

Standing next to each other in a warm-up.
Laughing because they both got the same dance move wrong.
Helping each other remember a line.
Sharing a conversation at break.

At first, they're just little moments.
Then one week you notice they're saving each other a seat.
The next, they're chatting before class starts.

Before long, they're asking if their new friend is coming next Saturday.
Parents sometimes expect friendships to happen instantly.

I've learnt they usually grow the same way confidence does.

One small interaction at a time.

If your child hasn't found "their people" just yet, don't lose heart.
Sometimes they're much closer than you think.

✨ One of the lovely things about theatre is that it gives children the chance to imagine.

To ask “what if?”

To step into someone else’s shoes, see things from a different point of view and explore ideas they might never come across in everyday life.

In his latest blog, our Artistic Director Kevin Dowsett talks about dreams, reality and the part theatre can play in helping young people explore both. 🎭

Through acting, singing and dance, those ideas can be played with, shared and brought to life.

Already wondering what you’re going to do with them over half term? 😆

We might be able to help.

Our Halloween Workshop is happening on Saturday 31st October and we’ve got sessions for children aged 4–18 across Hitchin, Letchworth and Stevenage.

Three hours of singing, dancing and acting for our Main Company age group, or a 90-minute session for our Minis.

They get to have some Halloween fun.
You get a little bit of peace and quiet.
Everyone wins. 😂🎃

𝗪𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗶𝘁 𝗺𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗲𝗿.

We were rehearsing Viva La Vida for one of our shows and Robert had arranged it into three parts, the tune and two different harmonies.

Which meant some of the kids had to stand next to someone singing something completely different... and somehow stick to their own part.

It was hard.
Especially for some of the younger ones.

We could have taken the harmonies out and had everyone sing the tune.

But we didn't.

And the first time we put all three groups together and it actually worked, it brought a tear to my eye.

You could see it on the kids' faces too.

They knew they'd done it.

It's got me thinking about whether children's activities should always be easy because they're supposed to be fun.

Do you have a little Frozen fan at home? ❄️

Then this one is definitely for them.

Our half term Frozen Workshop is specially designed for 4–5 year olds, with singing, dancing, drama and lots of chances to use their imagination.

No experience needed. No pressure to perform. Just lots of fun.

And yes… I’m fairly sure Olaf will get a mention. ⛄😂

One thing I've got much less worried about as I've got older is what other people think of me.

I remember buying a pair of silver trainers years ago.

I thought they were really cool.

But I was so worried about what other people would think of them that I didn't have the courage to wear them.

Which seems ridiculous now 😂

Because I've realised something as I've got older.

Most people really aren't paying that much attention to you.

They're far too busy worrying about what everyone else thinks of them!

I wish I'd realised that when I was younger.

I think I would have worn a lot more silver trainers 😂

These days, if I like something, that's enough for me.

Hence the photo of me very happily sitting at one of our favourite folk festivals 😁

Anyone else care a lot less about what people think as they've got older?
