FAQ Friday💬
With September approaching and children starting school, a question we get asked, "How do you prepare children for school?"
Preparing children for school isn't just about learning letters and numbers. Of course we introduce these through play, stories, songs and everyday activities, but school readiness is about so much more.
A big part of it is helping children become confident and independent in the things they do every day.
We encourage our children to:
• Put on their own coat and have a go at getting themselves dressed.
• Use the toilet and wash their hands independently.
• Serve up their own food at mealtimes.
• Clear their plate when they've finished and put it onto the trolley.
• Listen and follow simple instructions.
• Take turns, share and play with others.
• Ask an adult for help when they need it.
• Make choices and have a go at doing things for themselves.
• Recognise their own name and belongings.
We also talk about starting school, read stories and give children lots of opportunities to talk about what school might be like.
For us, being ready for school doesn't mean a child needs to be able to read, write or do everything for themselves before they start.
It's about helping them build the confidence, independence and social skills they need to take that next big step. 💛
And most importantly, we want them to feel excited and proud about moving on to school!
