Pupils facing social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) challenges can be withdrawn and isolated, suffering in silence, others display hugely challenging and disruptive behaviour that significantly affects those around them. All are in desperate need of nurture - a different approach to learning that prioritises relationships and wellbeing. Research has shown that a nurturing approach to educatio

The transformative power of nurture โœจ

The Mulberry Bush Nurturing Schools project implemented a whole-school approach to nurture in five primary schools over two years.

Over the course of the two-year project each participating school received:
๐ŸŒŸ Funding for a nurture group and resources including Boxall Profileยฎ Online
๐ŸŒŸ Whole-school staff training on attachment theory, emotion coaching, and more
๐ŸŒŸ Regular professional supervision from an educational psychologist
๐ŸŒŸ Professional supervision of a family support worker

The outcomes for the schools, teachers, and pupils were overwhelmingly positive.

The findings have now been published in the latest volume of The International Journal of Nurture in Education - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1wr4pu5e_RFvfzWPyp_nSs2EhIPjM34oI/view?usp=sharing

We all have the capacity for empathy, but it must be nurtured and developed in children ๐Ÿ’—

We can help children by...
๐Ÿ’ฌ Building emotional vocabulary - "I can see your frustrated by this activity"
๐ŸŒŸ Practicing random acts of kindness
๐Ÿค” Interpreting expressions and body language
๐Ÿ“– Reading books to understand different characters' feelings
๐Ÿฅฐ Being an empathy role model
๐ŸŽญ Using role play, re-enact a situation and explore different perspectives

How do you encourage empathy in children?

How do you create a nurturing environment in schools?

Safe and supportive spaces are essential for children and young people to succeed emotionally, physically, and academically ๐Ÿš€

These are some great features we've seen work in nurture rooms and mainstream settings:
๐ŸŒŸ Cosy, calm, and quiet
๐ŸŒŸ Well-staffed
๐ŸŒŸ โ€˜Nurture nooksโ€™ within classrooms
๐ŸŒŸ Zones of regulation
๐ŸŒŸ Worry boxes
๐ŸŒŸ Sensory activities, like play dough and fidget toys
๐ŸŒŸ Unkindness forms

Do you have any to add? ๐Ÿ‘‡

Today is National Offer Day ๐ŸŒฑ

This is the day when Year 6 pupils across the country find out which school they'll be attending in September. The transition from Primary to Secondary School is a huge change for children, even for the most resilient and well-adjusted among them.

Imagine the change through the children's eyes ๐Ÿ’ญ
๐ŸšถFirst, an unfamiliar route to school. The risk of getting lost and being late.
๐Ÿซ You arrive to a new and confusing environment that you don't know how to navigate
๐Ÿ‘‹ There are more pupils, more staff, more subjects, more demands
๐Ÿ“š There is new work to get to grips with, and a much more complex timetable to manage
๐Ÿ• At breaktimes, you don't know what you're supposed to do, or where to go
๐Ÿ˜“ Plus, you've lost your peer networks and have to start building new ones
๐Ÿ†˜ You don't know where to seek help if you need it

However, there is a lot that schools, teachers, parents, and pupils themselves can start doing now to make that transition a little easier and alleviate some pressure.

Our Transition Tool Box is available on our Shop, currently 10% off ๐Ÿ‘€ https://www.nurtureuk.org/product/transition-tool-box/

Fantastic first meeting of the APPG on Inclusion and Nurture in Education this week!

It was a privilege to hear from Swabra Lloyd of Forest Academy primary school in Croydon and Andrea MacDonald of Beacon High School in Islington, whose passionate words brought to life the huge difference inclusion and nurture practice has made for their children, families and staff.

We're honoured to be providing the secretariat for this vital APPG and delighted to join forces with Sarah Hall MP, Darren Mott OBE, Marie Goldman - Chelmsford, Vikki Slade, and many others, to champion inclusion and nurture, and create a sense of belonging for all children in school.

As our Chief Exec Arti Sharma shared at the meeting, nurture must become the norm if we are going to help our children succeed.

Thank you to Lib Peck, CJ Burge, Sharon White DFIFIP, Tony Doran and James Roach for their valuable contributions to a great discussion, we look forward to continuing our work together.

Why is play disappearing? ๐Ÿ›

According to the Raising the Nation Play Commission, children are increasingly unhappy and unhealthy, with less time outdoors with friends, and more time in front of screens ๐Ÿ˜ตโ€๐Ÿ’ซ

Plus, there are more and more barriers to play, such as:
โ›”playground closures
โ›”shorter school break times
โ›”streets unsuitable for play
โ›”lack of gardens
โ›”โ€˜No Ball Gamesโ€™ signs
โ›”lack of play-based learning in curriculum

Play is essential to children's social and emotional development, growing life skills such as problem-solving, communication, self-regulation, and resilience.

We support the Raising the Nation Play Commission and their recommendations to the government. Their interim report is available now.

'Park House School in Grimsby has turned our lives around' 21/02/2025

School exclusions can impact children for life โ›”

"They're not naughty; they just need to learn differently"
This what one member of staff says about the pupils attending a school in Grimsby known as the โ€œnaughty school.โ€

Of the 63 young people that attend the school, most have been permanently excluded or at risk of suspension from mainstream schools.

Exclusions disproportionately impact children with disabilities or mental health conditions, children living in poverty, and children from marginalised communities.

๐Ÿ’ก This school is helping pupils turn their lives around through a foundation of social, emotional, and mental health support.

"It's said it's the naughty school, but it's not, it's here to help you.โ€ - previous pupil

'Park House School in Grimsby has turned our lives around' Park House School is making a difference to pupils who have struggled in mainstream education.

Our Story

Nurtureuk exists to promote the development of nurture groups and to ensure the continuing quality of their delivery through accredited training programmes, research on effective practice, relevant publications and information exchange. Its aim is to make the nurture group approach available to all pupils who need it and also to ensure that the connections between learning and early development are understood throughout education.

Nurture groups are founded on evidence-based practices and offer a short-term, inclusive focused intervention that works in the long term. Nurture groups are classes of between six and twelve children or young people in early years, primary or secondary setting supported by the whole staff group and parents. Children attend nurture groups but remain an active part of their main class group, spend appropriate times within the nurture group according to their need and typically return full time to their own class within two to four terms. Nurture groups assess learning, social and emotional needs and deliver whatever help is needed to remove the barriers to learning.
