We have water safety sessions arranged for the children over the next few weeks. We have also arranged for Durham Fire Service to come into school, who will be leading an assembly with our Key Stage 2 children.
Four β thatβs the number of teenagers who lost their lives in water in the space of just one Bank Holiday weekend.
Tomorrow, the sun is set to make an appearance for what may be the only prolonged spell of good weather this week β and weβre urging parents and carers to talk to young people about the dangers of swimming in open water.
This comes after four teenagers in England tragically lost their lives between Saturday 23 May and Monday 25 May. Our thoughts remain with their families.
Open water may look calm but it can be extremely dangerous. Even on warm days, the water can be cold enough to trigger cold water shock, affecting breathing and movement within seconds.
Currents can overpower even the strongest of swimmers.
There may also be hidden dangers like rocks beneath the surface.
Remember, 'Float to Live' if you do find yourself in trouble in the water.
Float on your back with your ears under the water and use your hands to help stay afloat.
Call for help and try to steer yourself towards the shore.
π²If you see someone in difficulty, phone 999 and ask for the fire and rescue service, tell the person to float on their back and throw them something that floats.
