We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Old Stamfordian Michael John Knight Smith OBE (MJK Smith) at the age of 92.
MJK attended Stamford School from 1943–1951, where his exceptional sporting talent quickly became evident. Captain of the School Cricket Team and awarded Cricket Colours, he would go on to become one of the most respected figures in English sport.
An England cricket captain, Warwickshire legend and England rugby international, MJK remains England’s last men’s dual international in cricket and rugby. His remarkable achievements included becoming the first player in ten years to score 3,000 runs in a single cricket season for Warwickshire.
His connection with Stamford School remained strong throughout his life, including returning in 1993 to open the School’s refurbished pavilion. He was always a welcome visitor back to Stamford, showing a genuine interest in the next generation of cricketers following in his footsteps.
Beyond his achievements, MJK will be remembered for his leadership and sportsmanship, qualities that continue to inspire generations of Stamfordians.
Our thoughts are with his family, friends, teammates and all who knew him.

A huge achievement for our Debating Team, who represented Stamford brilliantly at the prestigious English Speaking Union Schools’ Mace Finals Day.
Competing against some of the top schools in the country, Saanvi, Tess and Noah impressed throughout with confidence, eloquence and humour, supported by teammates Bear and Rebecca.
While they narrowly missed out on the final, they left a lasting impression on both the judges and the ESU press team, with Tess and Noah selected for interview on the day.
As Charles Byrne, Director General of the ESU, said: “Reaching this stage is a remarkable achievement.”
We are incredibly proud of you all.

An incredible achievement for Olly (Year 11) who has officially been awarded the prestigious Arkwright Engineering Scholarship.
With more than 4,000 applications submitted nationally and fewer than 200 scholarships awarded, this is a truly outstanding accomplishment.
A fantastic achievement and thank you to Mr Newton (Head of DTE) for his continued mentoring and support throughout the process.
