Wild at Heart

Wild at Heart A unique Outdoor Learning Nursery and Forest School set in 5 acres of privately owned Rutland countryside in Ketton, near Stamford.

We are situated in a beautiful rural location, surrounded by wonderful unspoilt countryside, which allows the children to play in an open air environment and ideally supports our Outdoor Learning Ethos. We have a woodland, an open meadow, and a riverbank – perfect for pond dipping and paddling. We also have the benefit of a Mongolian yurt with woodburner for getting cosy and snuggling up for story-telling and learning. We are now taking registrations for September 2022, with Early Years Entitlement Funding available.

WE LOVE CREATING ARTWORK WITH LEAF RUBBINGS AT FOREST SCHOOL!

We looked at different ivy leaves and learned about how ivy leaves have a stem which connects them to the ivy plant and that ivy leaves have veins just like we do.

WE WERE WERE THRILLED TO NOTICE VIOLETS ON OUR WOODLAND FLOOR AT FOREST SCHOOL TODAY!

Violets are harbingers of spring and provide an important source of food as well as egg laying habitat for butterflies. We know that the spring and butterflies are coming soon!

TODAY, WE ENJOYED WATCHING THE RISING RIVER LEVELS AT FOREST SCHOOL!

We noticed that the river was rising in the morning, so we investigated from a safe distance. We could see the different river channels in the rising water. After lunch, we went to look again and could see that the river had risen even higher. We learned that we should NEVER walk or play in a flooding river, so we kept to a safe distance as we made our observations.

WHEN IT REALLY, REALLY RAINS, WE CAN ALWAYS PLAY GAMES!

We are so lucky to have a beautiful yurt with a log burner, where we can get cosy and warm and where we enjoy playing with the wooden toys and games.

WE LOVE TAKING CALCULATED RISKS AT FOREST SCHOOL!

At the Ark at Wild at Heart, children can choose to take calculated risks at their own pace. They become more confident in their own decisions. Children who learn to trust their own judgement tend to make better decisions as they grow up and become adults.

WE LOVE CLIMBING AND PLAYING ON THE BIG LOGS AT FOREST SCHOOL!

At the Ark at Wild at Heart, the children enjoy climbing and playing on a variety of big logs; the favourite big log is a hollow tunnel with a few 'peephole' windows. The children use their imaginations to play house, bus, submarine and boat.

WE LOVE LEAVING PRESENTS FOR THE BIRDS AT FOREST SCHOOL!

Today, we looked at pictures of bird nests and talked about what we could see. Then we went on a hunt to gather some of the things we noticed in the nests. We found sticks, moss, leaves, feathers and grass. We put these things in egg cartons, along with a little bird seed, and left them around Forest School so that our bird friends could make a nest and enjoy a treat.

WE LOVE TO CREATE OUR OWN ROLE PLAY GAMES AT FOREST SCHOOL!

The children created a shop using pots, pans and utensils from the mud kitchen. They did this completely independently without any adult input. They used the wheelbarrows as their shopping trollies.

At The Ark at Wild at Heart, children have the time, space and resources to use their creativity and work collaboratively to make up their own games, following their own interests. It''s so heartwarming to observe them play.

WE LOVE LOOKING AFTER THE WILDLIFE AT FOREST SCHOOL!

Today we worked together to make bird feeders with apples and our own home-grown sunflower seeds at Forest School. This activity required good social skills as well as fine motor skills as we had to pinch the sunflower seeds to pick them up and push them into the apple.
