🌊 Surrey Canoe Club takes on the Nene Whitewater Centre

Here are some highlights from our recent club trip to the Nene Whitewater Centre, where paddlers had the opportunity to develop their moving-water skills, strengthen their confidence and enjoy a new challenge together.

Trips like this are an important part of the Surrey Canoe Club experience. They give members the chance to put their skills into practice in a different environment, learn from experienced coaches and support one another both on and off the water. It was wonderful to see the determination, teamwork and progress throughout the day—and plenty of smiles too!

At Surrey Canoe Club, we welcome paddlers at different stages of their journey. Whether someone is starting with their first session, returning to the sport or hoping to progress towards more advanced paddling, our coaching is adapted to help each person move forward safely and confidently.

Thank you to everyone who took part and helped make the trip such an enjoyable club day.

🚨 LAST MINUTE SPOTS: TRADING SCREEN TIME FOR RIVER TIME THIS SATURDAY? (AGES 8 TO ADULT) 🚨

Still trying to figure out your weekend plans? Don't let another beautiful summer weekend slip away to tech screens, couch scrolling, or the laundry pile.
Imagine your Saturday: instead of the usual morning rush, you and/or your kids are standing on the quiet bends of the Thames. The water is perfectly still, and you are about to take your very first confident stroke. This isn't just a day out; it’s a total transformation from an ordinary weekend to an unstoppable new adventure for adults and young people alike.

The Paddle Discover Award Beginner’s Course
* When: This Saturday, June 6th | 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM
* Where: Surrey Canoe Club (Scenic Surrey Waterways)
* Who: Perfect for adults, youth, and families (Minimum age: 8 years old)

In just one focused, high-value day, paddlers of all ages go from zero experience to proficient, independent explorers equipped with robust foundational skills.

Why This Saturday Session is Perfect for All Ages:
* Safety & Expertise First: You'll be coached directly by our Deputy Head Coach, Ian Fordham—a highly experienced and trusted, British Canoeing Level 3 Coach who holds full L3 Safeguarding qualifications, ensuring a safe, supportive environment.
* Zero Bad Habits: We guarantee that the techniques learned this Saturday set a permanent, robust foundation. Nobody will have to waste time unlearning bad practices later on.
* Perfect for Teenagers: This course is fully suitable for the Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) Bronze Award requirements and the Scouts and Guides Badges.
* Premier Family Paddling in Surrey: Shared laughter, shared balance—paddling brings families closer together while fully respecting local wildlife and river etiquette.

Our high-quality cohorts sell out incredibly fast because Ian provides individualised attention that gets real results for every age group. Once these last spots are gone, they are gone.

From the Riverbank to the Pub: Let’s Clear the Thames Together This Saturday! 🚣‍♂️

If you have walked along the towpath from the club down toward Staines recently, you have likely noticed the problem: plastic bottles, crisp packets, and discarded debris caught in the reeds.

Instead of just watching it drift past, a group of us are heading out this Saturday morning, the 30th of May, to do something about it. We are spending three hours clearing this specific stretch of the Thames as part of Big Paddle Cleanup.

As you can see from our video, it's an active, fun morning where you can see the direct impact of your efforts. It is also a casual way to meet new people, working alongside Surrey Canoe Club members, our local team, and neighbors who care about the area. Once the collection bags are full, we are all heading straight to The Kingfisher pub at about 1:00 PM to relax, swap stories, and grab a drink together.

Choose Your Team:

🛶 On the Water: If you can paddle a boat in a straight line, we need you on the river to grab floating debris that can’t be reached from the shore (not suitable for absolute beginners).

🚶‍♂️ On the Land: Perfect for families, youth, and anyone who prefers to stay on foot to clear the paths and riverbanks.

Logistics:

🗓 When: Saturday the 30th of May, 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM (Come for as long as you can)

📍 Where: Surrey Canoe Club, Thames Side, Laleham, TW18 1FA (Free parking on-site)

🍻 Social: 1:00 PM at The Kingfisher, Chertsey Bridge Road, KT16 8LF

We provide all the necessary kit—litter pickers, gloves, and bags.

To sign up, please email [email protected] or send a quick text/WhatsApp to 07447049157 so we can have enough equipment ready for you.

On the last club paddle of 2025, a variety of craft and a festive dinosaur made their way along the Wey Navigation to Newark Priory. It was a beautiful day for a paddle. Thinking of new adventures in 2026, take a look at what Surrey Canoe Club can offer! Merry Christmas from the Surrey Canoe Club Team! 🎄

If you’ve ever wondered what it feels like to be part of Surrey Canoe Club, our members have given us the most beautiful answer.

So many people tell us they arrive for their very first session feeling a bit unsure… Unsure if they’ll fit in. Unsure if they’ll manage the boat. Unsure if paddling is “for them.”
But something begins to shift as soon as they get on the water. The river slows everything down. Another paddler says hello. The coach gives a reassuring smile. Another friendly member shares a tip or a joke.
And suddenly, the nerves soften. People start laughing. They learn something new. They discover a feeling of relief they didn’t realise they needed. They realise they’re not just learning to paddle, they’re finding space, calm, confidence and connection.

Look at the words people used to describe the club…
friendly, relaxing, learning, guidance, happy, supportive, welcoming, fun, safe, scenic, super-friendly. (All taken straight from the word cloud. 🌈🚣‍♀️)
This is why Surrey Canoe Club feels different. It’s not about being perfect. It’s about being part of something. About feeling accepted, encouraged and free to grow at your own pace.
Whether you’re brand new or years into your paddling journey, the river has room for you and so do we. Thank you to everyone who shared their words.
You’ve painted the most honest picture of who we are:
a community where people relax, learn, feel safe and feel at home.
