Discovering open and closed syllables using multi-sensory learning. When the vowel is closed in by a consonant, the syllable is 'closed' giving the vowel a short vowel sound. When the vowel is no longer closed by a consonant the syllalble is 'open' giving the vowel a long vowel sound.

Knowledge of syllable types is an important decoding tool for both reading and spelling.
