Did you know that Soroptimists, including a member of our Club were involved in supporting the changes which brought about The Oslo Convention. The Convention on Cluster Munitions is an international treaty that prohibits all use, transfer, production, and stockpiling of cluster munitions, a type of explosive weapon which scatters submunitions over an area. Today is World Humanitarian Day. A day when we honor all those who risk their own safety to help others.

This day marks the anniversary of the 2003 bombing of the Canal Hotel in Baghdad, an explosive weapon attack that killed 22 aid workers. 23 years on, humanitarian workers and civilians are still being killed by the same means, in the towns and cities where they work.

Last year, 350 aid workers were killed. It was the second-highest number ever recorded.

The Explosive Weapons Monitor, found that attacks affecting humanitarian aid operations increased 52% in 2025 compared to the previous year.

At Norwegian People’s Aid, we have felt the consequences ourselves.

We lost two colleagues in Ukraine: Denys and Ruslan. Their deaths remind us of the risks humanitarian workers live with every single day.

Aid workers are supposed to be protected under international humanitarian law. Yet they are being attacked more and more often. This is a trend we cannot accept.

But in the midst of all this, our colleagues carry on. Together with humanitarian workers around the world, they stand up for people in need every day, under conditions that are becoming increasingly difficult.

That gives me hope. Even when the cost is high, there are people willing to make a difference, and that makes me proud to work for Norwegian People’s Aid.

Our local printed press has been doing us proud, albeit a little delayed from our AGM in April. The article has been featured in four local publications, The Staffordshire Newsletter, Stone & Eccleshall Gazette, Village Voice, and The Stafford Directory. Getting the word out, sharing our work, attracting new members, every little helps. Thank you to June for creating the article and making contact with the media.

The Lady Garden Foundation's Chelsea Flower Show exhibit has really opened up discussion about gynae conditions and cancers, not before time. Soroptimists have a project to encourage HPV vaccines for all young people, to eradicate cervical cancer deaths once and for all. It's not too much to ask, one jab for life.
