What’s something an art teacher said to you as a kid that you STILL remember? 👀

I think there’s enough places where kids are worried about getting things ‘right’, and I really don’t want art to be another one, especially in my studio.

Of course I teach technique, and I always help when something isn’t working but there’s a huuuge difference between teaching someone how to do something and telling them exactly what their art should look like. After all, confidence and creativity grow when you feel safe 🩵

Some potentially controversial things I do as an art tutor 👀

Basically…I don’t want my students to come to me and learn how to make art exactly like I do, that’s really boring. I want my art kids to have their own opinions, disagree with me sometimes, try weird ideas, make mistakes and work out what they actually like (when a student LOVES acrylics I know I’ve done my job well, as I’m much more of a watercolour gal)

I especially feel like this with my younger students, I’m really not interested in everyone producing the same technically ‘perfect’ piece of artwork at the end of a lesson. I’d much rather see their personality in it. I’m passionate about equipping kids with arty skills and the confidence to create the art they want to make*

*even if that does mean I have to deal with sassy kids telling me they don’t want to follow any of my advice 🥲

My art kids say the cutest things and I rarely get the chance to jot them down because I’m so busy admiring their incredible artwork, so lucky to teach the most wonderful kids ever!

Here’s just a few of the ‘controversial’ things I do as an art tutor for kids, I don’t stress about unfinished projects and I absolute do not expect students to work in silence 🥰

I’ve always believed that art lessons shouldn’t be about making every child create the same thing, in the same way, at the same pace.

My lessons are child-centred, which means I get to know each student as an individual and learn what they enjoy, what they’re curious about, what they find tricky and how they learn best. This generally means I spend every first lesson asking wayyy too many questions 🥹

Some students know exactly what they want to make, others change their minds five times in one lesson 😂 some want to learn specific skills, whilst others need a bit more freedom to experiment and find their own way 🌸

I built the space my younger self needed 🥹🎨

My studio is somewhere you don’t have to be especially ‘good at art’ to belong, there’s no fear or pressure to be perfect. It’s just a friendly space where kids can experiment, make a mess, discover new art skills and feel proud of what they achieve 🩵 getting to be that person for my students is one of the best parts of my job.

Maybe I didn’t have this space when I was younger…
so I decided to build it 🌸

My art lessons are built around each individual student, I love taking into account their interests, ideas, strengths and the things they’re excited to explore. I’m 100% certain that choosing to be less controversial would actually make my life a LOT easier but, hey ho, we can’t make things too easy…right?!
